Golden Eighties 1986

Set inside a sprawling mall, a tapestry of romantic entanglements unfolds among its retail workers. Sylvie, Myriam Boyer, a coffee shop employee, carries a quiet longing for her boyfriend who has left for Labrador in search of fortune. The film follows how her small hope brushes against the bustling rhythms of the mall, catching glimpses of affection in the faces of coworkers and customers alike.

On the shop floor, her regular customer Eli, John Berry, an American man, unexpectedly re-encounters Jeanne, Delphine Seyrig, a Polish-born Jewish woman who had been his lover after World War II when he was stationed in France. He pursues her with a determination to start anew together, but Jeanne cannot sever the life she has built with her shopkeeper husband and their son, Robert Schwartz. The tension between past loyalties and present commitments threads through their encounter, coloring every subsequent choice with a melancholic ache.

Meanwhile, Pascale, Pascale Salkin, a hairdresser at the mall, pines for Robert even as he finds himself drawn to Lili, the salon’s dynamic manager Fanny Cottençon. Lili’s ambitions seem to outpace the affection Robert feels for her, and the spark between him and Mado, a charismatic stylist played by Lio, deepens the web of desire and discontent. Pascale watches, longing and worry stitching her fate to the fates of others, as the lives of the workers intertwine with the ebb and flow of the salon’s fortunes.

Robert’s path then shifts when he is rejected by Lili in favor of Monsieur Jean, the wealthy married owner of the salon Jean-François Balmer. Rather than despair, he pivots toward hairdresser Mado, seeking a more stable future with her. Yet an impulsive moment of passion rekindles with Lili, a revelation Pascale cannot ignore, and soon whispers of infidelity ripple through the mall. The gossip reaches Monsieur Schwartz, who sees opportunity in the scandal and attempts to leverage it to push Monsieur Jean to sell the salon to him so he can expand his own shop, a calculated bid to reshape the retail landscape around them.

Monsieur Jean reacts with anger, violently confronting Lili in the salon as the emotional pressure cooker finally bursts. In the aftermath, Eli and Lili leave the mall together, signaling another turn in the delicate balance of loyalties. Three months pass, and Robert has established a boutique in the space once occupied by the salon, preparing to marry Mado. On the eve of the wedding, Lili returns to the mall to declare her enduring love for Robert, a confession that disrupts the fragile plans before them. Mado discovers the kiss in a fitting room and is heartbroken, seeking solace with Jeanne.

Jeanne offers a quiet, measured response, comforting Mado by suggesting that life with Robert would not have yielded true happiness, and extending an invitation to dinner with her and her husband. As they step outside the mall, they unexpectedly encounter Eli and his new wife, closing the circle on a day where old loves, new loyalties, and hard-won compromises continue to redefine the lives of everyone at the mall.
