In a dimly lit cinema, Gintoki Sakata confronts a legendary “movie thief,” a figure in Japanese cinema folklore known for filming inside theaters. After scolding the intruder, he is dragged through the camera lens into a radically altered world. Five years have passed, and the land of Edo has been remade into an apocalyptic wasteland. A threat called the White Curse looms, and the Time Thief has equipped Gintoki with a disguise to blend in as he tries to understand what happened. Before the Time Thief is damaged by criminals, Gintoki’s path is set on a collision course with old friends and new dangers.
In this future, Gintoki reunites with his former freelancers, who have radically changed. Shinpachi Shimura has become a cool samurai with no trace of his signature tsukkomi, and Kagura has transformed into a beautiful woman with a notably different way of speaking. The two have been living with the ache of their leader’s disappearance, unsure how to cope with the mystery surrounding Gintoki’s fate, and now they face a world where hope and danger coexist in equal measure. The idea that the future’s Gintoki might be dead presses on their hearts, and the bond among the trio becomes a quiet engine driving their resolve.
Their path leads them to a tense moment—the execution of three prominent figures tied to Edo’s turmoil: [Isao Kondo], the Shinsengumi leader; [Kotaro Katsura], a Joi terrorist; and mechanic [Gengai Hiraga]. The ceremony spirals into a crisis as Kondo and Katsura are saved by a new alliance formed by underlings [Sogo Okita], [Toshiro Hijikata], and the enigmatic Elizabeth, who have joined forces to oppose the bakufu. Meanwhile, Gengai Hiraga is revealed to be an imposter, complicating loyalties and revealing deeper scheming at play. Through these dangerous currents, Gintoki learns that the White Curse was born from the machinations of a sorcerous group known as Enmi, and that the virus has already begun its incubation, with dire consequences for those he cares about most.
The virus’s reach touches Tae Shimura, Shinpachi’s sister, who sits perilously close to death. To save her, Gintoki’s friends embark on a quest to locate the Enmi and end the threat once and for all. The journey leads to a brutal confrontation, where Gintoki confronts and kills the Enmi, only to discover that the future’s version of himself initiated these events to ensure his own demise at the hands of his past self. Yet even this dramatic turn does not end the danger—the White Curse persists, and Gintoki resorts to using the repaired Time Thief to travel further back in time to eradicate his past self, the White Demon, before the virus can take hold. The surprising twist arrives when the White Demon is revealed not as a memory but as Taizo Hasegawa, disguising himself to manipulate outcomes.
A crucial revelation shifts the course of the fight: Tama, the Time Thief, has been used by people from the future to prevent Gintoki from erasing his own existence, and to aid him in defeating the Enmi before the curse can begin. With Tama’s help, Gintoki, his loyal friends, and the last generation of the old Jouishi—the likes of Katsura, Takasugi, Sakamoto, and the White Demon (the past Gintoki)—unite to challenge the Enmi. In a climactic confrontation, Gintoki and the White Demon join forces to defeat the Enmi and halt the curse’s foothold on history. Peace returns long enough for Gintoki to reunite with the Yorozuya, and the trio eventually finds their way back to their original timeline, filled with renewed resolve and a vow to meet again.
The closing image lingers on the original Jōi members standing on a cliff, watching over what remains of the world they knew. Even after the timeline is altered, the post-credits scene hints at a simple truth: Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura continue to seek each other out, reaffirming the bonds that define their unlikely team.
