We embark on a journey along a flat, winding, and desolate road in the heart of a sun-baked desert. The atmosphere is one of silence, as two young men find themselves in a car, exchanging no words as they drive. They soon arrive at a designated “wilderness” trail and, armed with nothing but the clothes on their backs and an extra shirt, they set off into the unknown. Their spirits are high, filled with a sense of energy and adventure, as they talk about the elusive “thing” they are supposedly seeking, though they possess no map to guide them.

As they push forward, the breathtaking landscape shifts around them: first, they run through lush brush, then find themselves navigating rocky terrains, and eventually confronting the stark realities of an expansive desert. With each passing moment, the daylight fades into night, and the pair settles by a flickering fire, their surroundings becoming increasingly alien. The days stretch out endlessly, marked by an undefined confusion regarding the passage of time, and they find themselves amidst a surreal environment of lunar-like surfaces and sharp crags. Their clothing and faces become grimy from the rugged journey, and their interactions grow sparse and difficult to understand, emphasizing their disorientation.

Eventually, the pair separates, only to reunite when one, Gerry, finds himself trapped atop a towering rock formation. They engage in a conversation about a potential jump, leading to one Gerry crafting a “dirt mattress” to soften the landing. Their trek continues, but soon they tread atop a flat expanse of white salt, where their movements become labored and sluggish, like machines that are barely functioning. The struggling Gerry, who has fallen behind, collapses to the ground, overwhelmed by exhaustion.

As he lies there, the other Gerry approaches, offering a semblance of comfort. But the mood turns somber as Gerry, realizing the dire situation, makes the decision to leave, reaching over to hold the hand of his companion as he draws his last breath. In a moment of raw intensity, he rejects the comfort of that connection, rolling on top of his fallen friend, not in a gesture of love, but in a burst of chaotic energy aimed at strangling him. After this turmoil, he ultimately rises and walks away, leaving behind Gerry, now lifeless, as he gazes towards the moving forms on the horizon.

The relentless, vast landscape continues to unfold, but they are now safely viewed from the outside, as if in a car, away from the harshness of their surroundings. We find Gerry, sunburnt and hollow-eyed, turning to face a young boy sitting in the backseat beside him, both of them reflecting on the trials they have endured, and looking out at the ever-changing world through the car window.
