Germanicus, a lazy, work‑shy man, is captured by slave traders and taken to Rome, where he is sold to the nouveau‑rich Tusnelda. After a brief escape he becomes an imperial food taster. When the emperor dies, he is falsely accused of assassination and sentenced to the arena’s tigers. With the help of the black slave Saba he survives and is forced to become emperor. His pragmatic reforms foreshadow the empire’s sudden fall. Saba is made empress, and together they return to his village of Sumpfing, where he envisions a completely new future.
