P. V. Mathai was a participant in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, and after India beat Bangladesh, he rose to prominence as one of the first Malayalis from the Thrissur district to win a gold medal at the Games. This triumph brought him great local adulation: a hero welcomed home with cheers, and a community that celebrated his achievement as a shared victory. To honor the memory of his success, he gifted the youth of the area a ground and a small sports club, a place the people named Mathaiparambu. For a time, the mood around Mathaiparambu was hopeful and festive, a symbol of possibility for young athletes and dreamers alike. But that happiness was short-lived. tragedy struck when P. V. Mathai was killed in a road accident, and the ground that had once stood for sport and youth suddenly carried a heavier, more fragile memory.

The story then follows three boys who frequent Mathaiparambu—Vava, Pallan, and Thankan—whose lives drift around the ground they know so well. Their parents worry about the path they’re taking, and Vava’s father even seeks guidance from a local Mar Thoma priest, Fr. Mathews Vadakkan, Fr. Mathews Vadakkan who tries to steer the trio toward something more constructive. In the wake of this guidance, the boys become entangled in a series of small, growing adventures that pull them deeper into the community’s life. It is within this evolving dynamic that George Vadakkan enters their circle: a bright, restless youth whose presence shifts the balance of the group. George becomes a kind of leader figure for them, even as his relationship with his own ambitions and his father’s expectations complicates every decision they make.

A turning point comes when two people appear with an unusual proposal: they want to start a driving school in Mathaiparambu, but their first impression seems almost comically misaligned with the ground’s reputation. The idea draws the boys in, and soon the plan broadens into a more serious project that involves local families and the community’s trust. At the same time, they become aware of Merlin, a singer who captures George’s attention the moment they glimpse her. Merlin’s presence adds a new layer of color and tension to the ground’s life. George’s fascination rapidly becomes more than mere curiosity, and he and his friends decide to learn more about the woman behind the music—often seeking out her house and, on occasion, the people who know her best.

Merlin’s entrance also marks a test of character for George. He learns that Merlin is preparing to take a different path—one that might lead her to join a convent—and her mother’s insistence on certain qualities creates a playful, cryptic framework for their interactions. The three qualities—desire, wish, and love—become a sort of code by which George measures his own feelings and Merlin’s responses. In a tense moment framed by the convent’s walls, Merlin intervenes to shield him from a priest’s questions, and this act helps him see that she may possess at least one of those essential traits. Their bond deepens, even as the town’s gossip and the priests’ judgments press in.

As the ground’s life continues, passions flare and loyalties shift. The villagers’ attention turns toward a new drama: a plan to construct something on Mathaiparambu that pits old loyalties against new possibilities. Peter, the son of [P. V. Mathai], arrives with a claim on the ground and a promise to walk away if George agrees to his terms. Peter’s offer tugs at the boys’ sense of fairness and belonging, and soon a conflict grows between Peter’s ambitions and George’s stubborn sense of justice. The tension escalates when a botched scheme involving a stray dog conservation program damages George’s reputation, and Peter begins to manipulate the situation to his advantage.

The conflict culminates in a sobering discovery: Josephettan, a figure who had become a fixture on the ground, is found dead, and a powerful claim is made about his faith and burial. This shatters the community’s sense of order and pushes George to act with a fierceness that reveals both his courage and his vulnerability. He confronts Peter, who now threatens him directly, and the two sides clash in a struggle that tests their friendship, loyalty, and morality. In the aftermath, George and his friends part ways with Peter’s kabaddi team and form their own, determined to prove themselves on the field and in the eyes of their neighbors. Their new team faces off against Peter’s squad, and in a hard-fought victory they triumph, leading to Peter’s arrest for Josephettan’s murder and a painful reckoning for all involved.

Throughout the narrative, Mathaiparambu remains at once a symbol of communal pride and a space where youth grapple with responsibility, identity, and the pull of impossible dreams. The tale is told with a patient, observational tone that respects the complexities of the characters’ choices and the town’s evolving sense of justice. It is a story about how a community remembers its heroes, how a group of friends grows into their own version of adulthood, and how power, love, and betrayal can intertwine when a single place—the ground named after a fallen hero—becomes the stage for it all. The film ultimately suggests that even when a community forgets the original purpose of a space, the memories and lessons it holds can still guide future generations toward a more thoughtful path.
