Set in Washington, Dylan Schoenfield, Woodlands Academy’s top girl, and Josh Rosen, a film-geek schoolmate, are two high-school juniors with opposite personalities. When Dylan accidentally drops her fashionable, very expensive handbag into the mall fountain after a long day, she’s surprised to see Josh dive in to rescue it. In exchange for saving her bag, Dylan agrees to be the subject of Josh’s documentary about high school popularity. She hopes the film will help her campaign to become “Blossom Queen,” insisting that winning is her main goal in life. A clash soon erupts over how much of a diva she is, and Josh fires Dylan from the project, leaving him to steer the film in a new direction, which Dylan finds hard to accept.
Determined to make amends and reclaim his trust, Dylan decides to rejoin the project by watching Flight of the Navigator with Josh and his friends Ari, Steven, and Caitlin Raven. After the screening, the two kiss and make up, and Josh reinstates her on the documentary. That night, Dylan invites Josh to her house, where they create a chaotic, splendiferous “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sundae.” While Dylan steps away for a moment, Josh notices a wall of photographs, among them a picture of Dylan’s mom crowned Blossom Queen. Dylan explains that her mom held the title back in 1985 and had died when Dylan was eight, a revelation that deepens the emotional stakes of their evolving bond.
As their connection grows, Josh’s friends from the film club grow wary of his shift toward Dylan, doubting his loyalty and assuming he might have a crush. He pledges to attend the Mathlete Scavenger Hunt the next Saturday, balancing the pull between friendship, ambition, and romance. On the following Saturday, Josh lands a date with Amy Loubalu, but forgets the scavenger hunt. Facing a dilemma about where to take Amy, Dylan invites him to a house party hosted by Asher, where Josh finds the crowd overwhelming. He seeks Dylan’s advice on how to interact with Amy, but Asher and Amy catch them in a moment and Asher jumps to the conclusion that they’re secretly dating. Undeterred, Josh asks Amy to the spring formal, only to have Amy decline, explaining that while he isn’t secretly dating Dylan, he clearly wants to.
The next day, Dylan receives a note revealing that Asher is breaking up with her, accusing her of changing and drifting toward the “nerds.” At lunch, the pair’s tension spills over, and Dylan walks off in tears. Josh consults his friends and learns that Asher’s breakup has left Dylan more isolated, and to complicate matters, he’s been replaced by Caitlin as film-club president. Dylan’s best friends, Hannah Mornell and Lola Leighton, also bail on her because they have dates to the formal, leaving Dylan more vulnerable than ever.
Undeterred, Josh finishes his film and screens it for the public. Dylan expects it to crush her Blossom Queen bid, but she’s stunned and somewhat offended by how shallow the portrayal seems. When the audience laughs at the portrayal, she flees the theater in tears, and Josh chases after her. She accuses him of publicly humiliating her and demands that he leave her alone. It’s later revealed that the movie ends with a compliment to Dylan that she nearly missed.
The next morning, Amy shows up at Dylan’s door and they reconcile. Amy explains that the film wasn’t “terrible” at all and has, in fact, boosted Dylan’s popularity, encouraging her to watch it again. >“terrible”
At the Spring Formal, Dylan arrives wearing her mother’s dress, and Lola Leighton and Hannah Mornell ambush her, but Dylan still wins the Blossom Queen title just as her mother did. She delivers a heartfelt apology for much of what she said in the film, recognizes Josh’s support, and thanks Amy for being a true friend. In the closing moments, Dylan and Josh face the camera, offering apologies for the harsh words they had swapped at the start, and share a kiss, with Josh’s jacket draped over their faces as the scene fades.
