During the Apache Wars of the late 19th century, Beckford, a former soldier, is tasked by the US Army to deliver a shipment of essential medical supplies to San Carlos, Arizona, through hostile Apache territory. He sets out alone with two mules and a wagon.

Four days into the journey, Beckford crosses paths with survivors from a raided party: frontier settlers Valerie Butler and her husband Jeff, along with three travelers—gunhand “Mule” Charlie McKee, his subordinate Edmund, and McKee’s son Billy. Jeff lies grievously wounded, and after a tense introduction Beckford agrees to let the group ride along in the medicine wagon. The arrangement hardens quickly as McKee’s group pushes for a northern dash to safety, arguing that the Apaches will return to finish the job if they linger. Beckford, however, refuses to abandon the injured man or to alter his southbound route toward a watering hole that could help everyone recover.

At the oasis, Beckford performs a delicate operation, removing the bullet from Jeff’s wound. Yet trust remains fragile: Edmund openly resents the quiet authority Beckford exerts, and McKee’s party presses for a faster, northward escape. The tension comes to a head when Billy spots an Apache scout and Beckford, recognizing the moment, tries to speak to the stranger as a friend. Before any dialogue can unfold, Billy shoots the scout dead. Beckford orders the body buried, hoping to delay a wider Apache pursuit, while the others mutter of mutiny. As burying the scout consumes time, Beckford visits the grave of his own brother, a notorious Confederate outlaw who was killed years earlier while awaiting a pardon at the same watering hole. Beckford suspects McKee and his men of involvement in his brother’s death, though the evidence isn’t conclusive.

Over a shared meal, McKee drops his courteous veneer and reveals a hidden truth: he and his companions carry a large sum of money. He offers Beckford a thousand dollars to change course. Beckford refuses, maintaining his duty and his southbound direction. The peace breaks when McKee bluntly declares his plan to steal Beckford’s wagon and mules.

That night, as Beckford keeps watch, the trio attempt to ambush him. Beckford subdues Edmund and shoots Billy, who dies on the scene. The following morning, Jeff has recovered enough to speak and walk. He confides his fear of traveling through the Apache corridor and begs Beckford to turn north, even offering to divorce Valerie so Beckford can have her. Beckford’s disgust at Jeff’s cowardice is evident, and he refuses the offer.

The group hastily leaves the oasis, but the Apache have already found the dead scout, and a war party closes in. They are captured and brought before Chief Victorio. McKee and Edmund ultimately reveal their true identities as bank robbers from San Carlos and admit they killed Beckford’s brother. Victorio subjects the men to torture, offering mercy to the one who endures without begging. Jeff and Edmund fail the test; Billy is dead, and McKee is also beaten. As Beckford braces for his turn, Victorio recognizes him as the survivor of a long-ago, unsanctioned Apache attack that took his wife and left Beckford scarred. In a surprising decision, Victorio frees Beckford, granting him safe passage toward San Carlos.

Beckford resumes his journey south, now accompanied by Valerie and Jeff. Edmund and McKee manage to break free, but Jeff intervenes during a subsequent confrontation, and both Jeff and Edmund are killed. McKee, blinded, faces Beckford’s judgment. Beckford offers a stark choice: take McKee to San Carlos to stand trial and be hanged, or execute him on the spot. McKee chooses execution, and Beckford carries out the sentence. The survivors bury the three dead and continue their trek, with Beckford and Valerie moving forward together toward an uncertain future.
