Laine is a drifting, restless figure who begins her uneasy night in a motel parking lot, where sleep comes softly in the quiet of the lot and a sense that she’s slipping away from something. When morning breaks, she hides a personalized money clip and meets the motel owner, Luanne, who offers a hot meal on the house. A local police officer named Gault stops by in the course of the morning to change Laine’s flat tire, and in a calm, almost casual way, he explains that a brutal murder has rocked the nearby town of Flagstaff. The encounter plants a thread of tension in Laine’s day, as if the world is watching and waiting for something to snap.

As a small favor, Laine makes coffee for Luanne, and the kindness of a stranger unsettles her just enough to push her forward. On the recommendation of Gault, Luanne proposes a job for Laine as a waitress in the motel’s diner. But Laine rejects the offer politely, asking instead for a free room for the night. Luanne, seemingly offended by the rebuff, agrees nonetheless, and the two women settle into a wary alliance that hints at something more dangerous beneath the surface. Later, Laine slips into an adjoining room to explore, and before the occupants return, she steals a necklace and a bottle of sedatives. The couple’s return brings tension to the surface as Laine hides in the closet and overhears a heated conversation about a heist just completed.

Believing the drop-off will occur at the motel, Laine makes amends with Luanne and asks again for a job. When Luanne hesitates, Laine reveals a desperate truth: she would return to an abusive boyfriend if given the chance, a motive that convinces Luanne to hire her. At the diner, the night shifts into a crowded tableau: Lee, a taciturn man; Flynn and Gloria, the couple from the neighboring room; and Eddie, Gloria’s younger brother. A wave of anxiety ripples through Gloria when she discovers her necklace is missing, and the others scramble to soothe her while Gault steps in to keep things under control. Laine, who senses danger closing in, slips away again and returns the necklace. Gault flirts with Laine, a moment she bluntly rebuffs, and in retaliation, he slashes her tires.

That night, Laine begins to practice her own quiet method of control, putting sedatives into a customer’s drink and watching him fall asleep. The party mood takes over as Flynn and Gloria drink to celebrate their imminent fortune, while Laine plots to dose them as well. Lee returns to the diner with a growing rage upon hearing the raucous celebration and orders Laine to leave. She refuses, inviting a harsh confrontation; he beats her to demand her true identity. Luanne steps in to defend her, but the confrontation ends only when Laine admits to killing a man in Flagstaff who had attempted to rape her. The confession changes the dynamic: Lee recognizes the money clip as belonging to the murdered politician, and the fear of going to the police loosens its grip on Laine. He allows her to stay for now, and Luanne persuades him to give Laine a small cut of the night’s windfall.

The group returns to the diner, and Laine serves coffee laced with sedatives. Eddie, Gloria’s brother, declines the sedative, but others fall under its quiet spell as Laine makes her move. A courier arrives with the money, but Eddie awakens and fights back, dragging Laine into a desperate struggle. He escapes with the cash, and Laine, suspicious and furious, accuses him of drugging them and running off with the prize. Lee insists she accompany him as they pursue Eddie, and a perilous trail unfolds.

On the road, Eddie’s car is found overturned amid bloody tracks. Lee presses forward and confronts Eddie, only to be met by Gloria’s desperate defense of her brother. In the ensuing violence, Lee kills both Eddie and Gloria. Gloria’s necklace is claimed by Luanne, who quickly dons it, a small victory in a night full of losses. The discovery of Eddie’s corpse in the trunk of the car raises the tensions further, and Flynn, driven by grief, shoots Lee and attacks Luanne. Laine seizes Lee’s pistol and holds back Flynn, but it’s Luanne who eventually ends up killing him, a grim closure to their volatile night.

Back at the diner, the mood darkens as Luanne uncovers a bottle of sedatives and grows suspicious of Laine. In a brutal turn, Laine bludgeons Luanne to death before Gault returns, this time with back-up and a request for accountability. He asks for corroboration of the events, and in a telling moment, Laine teases the possibility that Gault himself might have been involved in the corpse in Eddie’s car. Gault, choosing pragmatism over truth, allows Laine to leave on one condition: she must align with his version of the night’s events.

In the end, the motel’s glow fades into the night as Laine walks away with a deeper understanding of danger and desire. The money remains elusive to all but the choices each person made in the chase for it, and the moral shadows cast by the night’s actions linger long after the final credits would roll. The film closes on a raw, unsettled note, where trust is scarce, survival comes at a steep price, and the line between victim and predator blurs in the dim light of a desert town.
