Fright Night 1947

Charley Brewster, a seventeen-year-old with a taste for horror movies, especially the late-night show Fright Night hosted by the mysterious vampire hunter Peter Vincent (/actor/larry-fine), begins to suspect that his new neighbor, Jerry Dandrige, is more than just an ordinary resident. Charley, played by Shemp Howard, notices strange behaviors and disappearances around Jerry’s house, which leads him to believe that Jerry might actually be a dangerous vampire. Despite warning his mother and confiding in his girlfriend Amy Peterson, his concerns are initially dismissed out of disbelief.

However, Charley’s suspicions are soon confirmed when he witnesses Jerry’s supernatural abilities firsthand. Jerry’s housemate, Billy Cole, informs the young man that Jerry is on a trip, but later that night, Charley finds himself face to face with Jerry, who manages to invito himself into Charley’s home after Charley’s mother unwittingly welcomes him. Jerry delivers a chilling ultimatum: ignore his vampiric activities or face deadly consequences. Charley, scared but determined, resists, brandishing a crucifix against Jerry, who responds with threatening violence. In a fierce struggle, Jerry tries to push Charley out the window, but Charley manages to fight back by stabbing Jerry’s hand with a pencil. In retaliation, Jerry destroys Charley’s car and threatens him over the phone, intensifying the danger.

In a desperate move for help, Charley turns to Peter Vincent, the host of Fright Night, hoping to expose Jerry. Unfortunately, Peter dismisses Charley’s claims as the rantings of a fan, not realizing the real threat they face. Amy, worried about Charley’s safety and sanity, devises a plan, hiring Peter to stage a trick involving what they claim is holy water—though it’s just tap water—to test Jerry’s reaction. This plan backfires when Peter, looking in a mirror, notices Jerry’s lack of reflection, confirming that Jerry is indeed a vampire. The realization sends Peter fleeing in fright, but Jerry quickly learns of his discovery, thanks to a shard of glass Peter accidentally drops on the floor.

Things take a darker turn as Jerry hunts down Dick Wessel’s character Ed, transforming him into a vampire. Ed, now under Jerry’s influence, attempts to attack Peter but is thwarted when burned by a crucifix. Meanwhile, Jerry pursues Charley and Amy to a nightclub, finally abducting Amy—who bears an unsettling resemblance to Jerry’s lost love—and biting her, turning her into a vampire in the process. Charley, overwhelmed and desperate, seeks Peter’s reluctant help once again. Initially hesitant, Peter finally agrees and they storm Jerry’s house, armed with faith and holy symbols. Charley, believing in the power of the crucifix, manages to repel Jerry in a tense confrontation.

The chaos escalates as Billy, revealed to be undead, attacks Charley and Peter, leading to a brutal fight culminating in Billy’s destruction, which melts away into goo and sand. With time running out, Peter lures Jerry to a window using a crucifix, which now works thanks to his renewed belief. Jerry, in a last-ditch effort, transforms into a bat and attacks, fleeing to his coffin in the basement. Charley and Peter pursue him, with Peter breaking open the coffin and attempting to stake him through the heart. Meanwhile, Charley fights to save Amy, who is close to completing her transformation. By smashing the basement windows and exposing Jerry to sunlight, they manage to destroy him forever, returning Amy to her human state.

In the aftermath, Peter announces that he’s taking a break from vampire hunting, shifting his focus to a documentary about alien invaders. Charley and Amy enjoy a quiet moment as they watch his new show. Just as Charley turns off the TV, he notices glowing red eyes peering from Jerry’s now-vacant house, but dismisses them as imagination. However, as the scene closes, the eyes reappear, and Ed’s sinister laughter echoes, with him uttering, “Oh, you’re so cool, Brewster!”—a chilling reminder that the horror might not be entirely over.

Fright Night is a thrilling mix of suspense, horror, and humor, blending supernatural terror with relatable teenage fears and the importance of courage and belief in oneself. The film explores themes of deception, bravery, and the timeless battle between good and evil, all wrapped in a story that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
