In the midst of the Italian campaign in World War II, the American 36th Infantry Division battles uphill trenches and stubborn German resistance as Rome looms closer along the Allied advance. After the brutal fighting at the Battle of San Pietro in mid-December 1943, the soldiers are granted five days of much-needed rest. Sgt. Joe ‘Pete’ Peterson wanders through a moonlit cemetery marked by fresh crosses, searching for a quiet moment amid the chaos of war. There he encounters Lt. Eleanor Mackay, a capable young officer who keeps her guard up, brushing aside his attempts to break the ice, leaving Pete to wrestle with the loneliness that war and distance create.
Pete’s mood shifts when his friend and commanding officer, Maj. Blackford, conveys the news that Pete has earned a battlefield commission and will be moving up to second lieutenant. The moment is double-edged: pride for the promotion, and a heavier weight of responsibility. The division’s morale-dipping undercurrents surface again when Sgt. Smiley ‘Mac’ McFee grows upset over not having received a letter from his wife in weeks. Pete helps him track down mail at the post office, and Ellie reappears in their lives, offering a drink to celebrate the promotion. Ellie admits she almost married another soldier, now buried in that cemetery, and she fears opening her heart again. Yet, when the division’s leave is cut short, Ellie’s resolve falters and Pete finally wins her consent to marry on his next leave.
The quiet, personal stakes rise to the surface as Blackford tasks Pete and his platoon with clearing a German roadblock. Pete completes the initial clearance and radios back, but when the moment to strike the German defenses arrives, he hesitates, torn by thoughts of Ellie. He calls in an artillery strike, but as Blackford commands the tank column from the lead, two formidable German 88 antitank guns command the road and annihilate the leading Sherman. The event seals Blackford’s fate in a fiery wreck, and Pete is wounded by an artillery barrage, slipping into unconsciousness.
When Pete wakes, a heavy guilt presses down: he wonders if his own survival instincts—driven by thoughts of Ellie—prevented a more decisive attack. He spirals into a depression, isolating himself from his comrades. Ellie refuses to abandon him, visiting and urging him to see the future beyond the war. Pete is granted a three-day leave before being sent back to a replacement depot, but the couple chooses to marry in the countryside before he departs. Ellie vows to stand by him, even as she faces the prospect of discharge to return stateside when their love becomes a family’s reality.
Months pass, and Pete’s sense of purpose is tested again when he is ordered into dangerous house-to-house recon work. He is listed as missing and presumed dead, a fate Ellie refuses to accept. Her determination drives her to scour every corner for news, keeping faith that he is alive. The Allies eventually enter Rome, and Ellie learns a startling truth: Pete had been taken prisoner, only to be freed when the Germans abandoned the city intact. Though his leg injury flares in the aftermath, the reunion with Ellie—and the prospect of safety and a hopeful family ahead—outweighs every scar and setback.
