Eric Newby is an English soldier in 1943, captured by the Germans and imprisoned in a former mansion in Italy. The mansion is beautiful, a surprising contrast to the war outside, and the prisoners inside are well fed and receive regular Red Cross packages. As Wanda and her Italian girl friends bicycle past the grounds, Eric notices her, and she returns his glance with a curious mix of caution and curiosity.

In one of the Red Cross packages, Eric acquires an Italian language book, a small key to connection in a place designed to keep prisoners passive. Wanda soon finds her way into the prisoner section as an Italian language mentor, and, true to her nature, she becomes his student as well. The bond between them grows in the margins of fear and routine, a quiet exchange that hints at trust beyond the wires and guards.

Sometime later, a breakout reshapes their fragile balance. Eric and others manage to escape, and Wanda rediscoveres him in the confusion. She leads him north, toward the hope of Switzerland, and together they navigate the uncertain path toward freedom. Their journey brings them to an Italian farm, where Eric is received by a local family and presented as Italian in appearance, blending into a world far different from the one he left behind. He stays on the farm as a farm worker, until the danger that haunts the escape reaches even this remote corner.

Yet danger is never far. The Nazi soldiers intensify their search for the escaped prisoners, and the people of the region rally to protect those who might vanish into the hills. A secret small residence takes shape in the surrounding countryside, a hidden refuge designed to shelter Eric from pursuers. The German search party arrives with tracking dogs, and the hidden refuge is discovered; Eric and Wanda shelter in the nearby rocky outcroppings, fighting to stay unseen.

To spare Wanda from consequences, Eric steps forward, presenting himself to the German soldiers and taking the risk upon himself so she can stay hidden. His sacrifice costs him his freedom, and he is returned to a prison of the war’s machinery. The war eventually ends, and two years after the fighting ceases, Eric returns to Wanda’s town. When he steps off the bus, uncertainty lingers in his eyes about what comes next, until Wanda spots him at the stop and they rush into each other’s arms, a moment of reunion that brings the story full circle.
