Arles becomes the backdrop for a tale of a widowed general practitioner, Dr Pellegrin Fernandel, who cares for two young daughters under his widowed mother’s watchful eye. At a party, he notices a confident widow, Armande Claude Nollier, who decides to become his wife. Though she capably takes over his house, his children, and the administration of his practice, the relationship lacks passion. He then meets a forward young woman, Martine Englebert Françoise Arnoul, who has come to Arles to find work, and after an evening’s drinking spends the night with him in a hotel.
