The 1999 film showcases Walter Koontz, played by Robert De Niro, a homophobic security guard from New York who faces life-altering challenges after suffering a stroke that leaves him partially paralyzed and with a significant speech impediment. His doctor suggests singing lessons to aid in his recovery, however, Walt feels too humiliated to approach a professional voice coach. Instead, he turns to his neighbor, Rusty Zimmerman, a flamboyant pre-operative transsexual and drag performer. Their initial interactions expose their biases against each other, yet they gradually uncover shared experiences and complexities that bind them together.
