Five Evenings 1978

Autumn 1958 unfolds in Moscow as Ilyin [Stanislav Lyubshin] returns to the city and, while at the home of his acquaintance Zoya [Valentina Telichkina], notices a building that echoes his prewar years. Drawn by nostalgia, he steps away from Zoya briefly to see if his former landlady, Tamara [Lyudmila Gurchenko], still lives there. When he finds Tamara, she shares a small, quiet life as a factory worker and party member, and she now lives with her nephew Slavik [Igor Nefyodov], whose mother died during the war. Tamara is reserved with Ilyin at first, yet she still allows him to stay in her spare room. To win her over, he fabricates a story about being a chief engineer, a bold pretension that only partially masks his longing to belong again. The two reconnect through shared memories, and Ilyin meets Slavik, gently insisting that he speak with respect about Tamara. Although Tamara initially resists rekindling old camaraderie, she gradually joins in, and a warm sense of connection begins to reemerge.

As the bond deepens, Ilyin confesses a daring plan: to quit his current job, become a driver, and move to Russia’s North, inviting Tamara to come with him. She questions this ambitious dream, yet she offers quiet, understanding support, recognizing his hunger for independence. The moment Tamara steps out of the apartment, Ilyin slips away without a farewell, leaving her to ponder his unpredictable path. Her curiosity leads her to Timofeyev [Alexander Adabashyan], Ilyin’s former classmate, who reveals that Ilyin left school after standing up to a corrupt official and later found purpose as a boxer and then a driver in the North. Timofeyev envies Ilyin’s courage and freedom, a quality Tamara begins to admire more deeply than before. Ilyin returns unexpectedly, opening up about his struggles and affirming that he has found happiness in life. In this renewed moment, Tamara accepts his invitation to travel wherever life may lead them, pride swelling in her chest as she witnesses his resilience. The couple settles into a quiet, enduring peace, with Ilyin slipping into sleep in Tamara’s lap and both finding a reassuring calm in each other’s presence.
