Autumn 1974

In mid-October, Ilya Yumashev, a doctor who is unhappily married and childless, and his childhood friend Sasha arrive from Leningrad to spend a week in a remote northern village, posing as a married couple. They reconnect after years apart, realizing that the feelings they once believed were gone have quietly endured.

There, they are hosted by the village pair Dusya Dusya and Eduard Eduard (Edik), who reveal their own marital struggles and invite the visitors to share in their stories. The presence of these hosts frames the week with frank conversations about love, commitment, and the compromises people make.

Ilya faces a deep inner conflict, knowing he should tell his wife that he’s leaving, yet he cannot bring himself to speak the words. The tension grows as he even makes a call from a nearby village, but remains silent, choosing restraint over revelation.

Sasha senses his hesitation and begs him not to walk away, even as doubt gnaws at her own certainty about their future together. The days drift by with fishing, long conversations, and quiet moments of reflection as the visitors absorb local rhythms and the hosts reveal their own joys and pains.

When the week ends, they return to the city as the season’s first snow falls, carrying with them a sense of unresolved longing and the fragile possibility of what might come next. Feeling unsettled by solitude, Sasha visits her friend Margot Margot, whose unconventional marriage offers a strange kind of comfort and perspective.

Back in her room late at night, Sasha finds Ilya waiting, a silent sign that he may have finally chosen to be with her, leaving both of them suspended between what they are and what they might become.
