Mrs. Pepper, Dorothy Peterson, and her five children Polly Pepper, Edith Fellows; Ben Pepper, Charles Peck; Joey Pepper, Tommy Bond; Davie Pepper, Jimmy Leake; and Phronsie Pepper, Dorothy Ann Seese, live a simple, precarious life in a crowded household. The family’s struggles are rooted in sorrow and loss: their father, John Pepper, a mine engineer, died when the copper mine he half-owned caved in. In the wake of his death, Polly inherits her father’s stake in the mine, a decision that carries the weight of his wish that she keep it at least until she comes of age, even though the mine never yielded copper. The responsibility falls on Polly to watch over her younger siblings while their mother works, weaving a quiet thread of resilience through their daily routine.
