What Is Film Before Film About?
The premise of Film Before Film without spoilers.
An encyclopedic survey of cinema’s prehistory, Werner Nekes follows the fascination with moving images—from shadow plays, peep shows, flip‑books, and magic lanterns to lithopanes, panoramas, scrolls and early colorful animation. The film shows how early creators used these devices to stage melodramas, comedies and even pornography, foreshadowing modern genres. Nekes offers a rich, sometimes erotic, visual collage celebrating these inventive toys.
