Florencia is the widowed matriarch of the Filipinas family and has six children: Yolanda, Samuel, Vicky, Gloria, Emman and Narciso. She also takes in Diana as her own, a servant’s daughter who finds a home under Florencia’s roof. As the family gathers at their ancestral residence for the Christmas holidays, Florencia feels the ache of her children drifting apart, watching old bonds fray anew even as they come together.

The eldest, Yolanda, runs a small sweets shop and remains loyal to her mother while navigating the complexities of love. She tracks down her ex-lover, Dindo, who has just been released from prison, only to learn that he is now engaged to someone else. A grim secret shadows Yolanda’s memories: she witnessed the killing of Rex—a friend of Samuel—in self-defense. The incident is tangled by a substances of guilt and cover-ups: Rex’s father had lent the weapon used, in a bid to secure a US visa. The truth surfaces slowly, pulling family loyalties in delicate directions.

Samuel, who has long harbored pro-American views, migrates with his family to the United States but finds himself undone by a workplace scandal that leaves him financially strapped. Returning home for the holidays, he wrestles with the weight of his missteps and the impact on his children, ultimately confessing the full extent of the family’s precarious finances to Florencia, who remains the steady center even as the world around them shifts.

Gloria, a nurse who has just come back from Israel after a suicide bombing, confronts a fraught web of debts and dependency. She resents Greg for letting remittances become the sole glue of their relationship and for letting their daughter drift away. Narciso, the youngest, serves in the military and secretly marries Dindi, shielding his nuptials and his child from his family. The couple’s hidden life becomes a flashpoint as the family’s stability is threatened by outside events.

Diana, who lives with Florencia, embodies a dream of independence. Her father, Poldo, is abusive and faces consequences when his actions push Diana toward her ambitions as a dancer. Poldo’s abuse leads to a mob lynching that devastates the Filipinas residence and Diana’s future, though her income from dancing eventually helps cover his medical costs after he is injured.

The holiday season erupts when Narciso returns from a mission only to be killed, sending shockwaves through the family and triggering Dindi’s miscarriage. At his funeral, Emman stage-manages a protest that turns the ceremony into a volatile political statement, while Samuel returns to the United States to seek work again, leaving his children behind. A year passes, and the family gathers again around Florencia, who remains in a coma. Yolanda steps forward as the new head of the family, rallying her siblings to keep hope alive for their mother’s recovery, while Gloria resolves to stand by Yolanda and push Greg toward finding work abroad. Emman, facing political pressure and danger, goes into hiding and joins the New People’s Army, complicating the family’s already fragile balance. The film closes on a quiet note of resilience: the family, fractured by choice and conflict, comes together in memory and love as they await Florencia’s awakening, with Yolanda hopeful that her mother will see them at peace again.
