Mark Conrad, Curd Jürgens, a debonair Anglo-Austrian former playboy and junk owner turned alcoholic, is expelled from Hong Kong. He is placed aboard the ancient ferry Fa Tsan, known to its crew as the Fat Annie, despite protests from its pompous owner, Captain Cecil Hart, Orson Welles.

He travels to Macau, only to be refused entry there as well. Seeking a place to belong, he wins the right to stay on board by outplaying the captain in a card game. His charm quickly endears him to the ship’s crew and to Liz Ferrers, Sylvia Syms, a teacher who is a regular passenger.

A fierce typhoon threatens the voyage, and during the crisis Conrad proves his leadership by taking control from the cowardly and drunken Hart and steering the ship to safety. Drifting along the Chinese coast, the Fa Tsan is boarded by pirates led by Johnny Sing-Up, Roy Chiao. Sing-Up reveals a troubling secret: Hart is a former conman who won the ship in a crooked card-game.

With the ship saved and the danger past, Conrad is celebrated as a hero and is allowed to stay in Hong Kong. He faces a personal test as he contemplates pursuing his budding relationship with Liz, but chooses to wait until he has beaten the dragon before fully committing.
