Nicole, played by Reese Witherspoon, is a relatively innocent teenager with a rebellious spirit, particularly towards her father, Steven Walker. At a vibrant rave, she meets David McCall, portrayed by Mark Wahlberg, and is instantly captivated by his charming and courteous demeanor. However, her father, Steven, played by William Peterson, is overly protective and distrustful of David the moment they cross paths. Tensions rise as Nicole frequently breaks curfew to spend time with David, aggravating Steven further.
As their romance deepens, Steven’s disapproval intensifies. A turning point comes when David reacts violently upon seeing Nicole hug a friend, Gary, injuring both Gary and Nicole in the process. This incident leads Nicole to break up with David, leaving him heartbroken. Yet, he quickly wins her back with an apology, smoothing over any issues between them.
Taking advantage of her emotional state, David comforts Nicole, feeding off the tension in her relationship with her father. Distrustful of David, Steven investigates his background only to discover that David is not who he claims to be. In a confrontation on the street, Steven urges David to stay away from Nicole. David feigns politeness but slyly insinuates that Steven’s desire to keep his daughter a child reflects his own insecurities. He makes a shocking implication about Steven’s wife, insinuating that she might be unsatisfied in their marriage.
After this, tension escalates. David employs manipulative tactics, even going so far as to harm himself to alienate Nicole from her father. In a moment of rage, Nicole storms off with David, but a visit to his house leads her to witness a shocking scene that devastates her. Misinterpretations ensue as she rejects David entirely, seeking distance from both him and his friend Margo.
David’s obsession drives him to grotesque lengths, including invading Nicole’s personal space in a mall. In a desperate bid to protect his daughter, Steven breaks into David’s home, uncovering a disturbing shrine dedicated to Nicole. Fueled by rage, he destroys the room and seeks out David to put an end to his reign of terror. In a climactic showdown, David captures Steven and brings him to Nicole’s room under the pretense of saying goodbye. With the tension at its peak, Nicole pretends to still care for David, biding her time until the moment strikes where Steven can finally free himself. What follows is a fierce struggle, culminating in Steven throwing David out of a second-story window, bringing the escalating violence to an end.
