Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Reviews & Ratings
Critics gave Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb users rate it 6.2/10. Our Echo Score gives it 67/100, strongest in sensory experience (72) and weakest in story & flow (55).
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Echo Score Breakdown
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore delivers a mixed experience that balances visual splendor with narrative overreach. While the film’s production design and magical set-pieces are frequently praised, critics and several viewers note a crowded plot and uneven pacing that dilute its impact. Performances, especially from Mikkelsen and Law, receive consistent commendation, yet the story’s coherence remains contested. The result is a moderately enjoyable entry that may satisfy franchise fans but leaves broader audiences ambivalent.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 70
In terms of direction and production design, the film showcases an ambitious visual palette, with richly detailed sets and inventive magical battles that many reviewers describe as breathtaking. Editing, however, is occasionally criticized for contributing to a sluggish rhythm, especially during exposition-heavy sequences. While cinematography earns praise for its atmospheric lighting, the overall craftsmanship oscillates between polished set-pieces and moments of narrative clutter.
- Character & Emotion 68
When evaluating acting and emotional depth, the ensemble receives notable commendation, particularly for Mikkelsen’s chilling portrayal of Grindelwald and Law’s nuanced Dumbledore, which many reviewers cite as the film’s strongest element. Newt’s quirky charm continues to resonate, though secondary characters are frequently described as underdeveloped. Chemistry among the leads is generally effective, yet the peripheral cast draws criticism for lacking distinctiveness, yielding a mixed character landscape.
- Story & Flow 55
The narrative is praised by some for its tighter structure compared with previous installments, yet many critics label it overstuffed and uneven, stretching limited plot material across a lengthy runtime. Pacing issues surface in exposition-heavy segments, and certain subplots, such as Dumbledore’s past romance, receive lukewarm engagement. Consequently, the story’s originality and coherence are perceived as compromised by an ambitious but cluttered script.
- Sensory Experience 72
The film’s sensory presentation excels in visual spectacle, with elaborate magical effects and a richly textured color scheme that many viewers describe as stunning. Sound design supports the action but receives less discussion, suggesting a competent yet unremarkable mix. Musical cues align with the darker tone, enhancing mood without dominating scenes. Overall, the sensory experience reinforces the movie’s atmospheric ambitions, even as other elements falter.
- Rewatch Factor 68
Rewatch potential is bolstered by strong visual moments and a compelling central trio, leading several fans to cite repeated viewings as rewarding. While the film’s dense plot may deter some, the emotional resonance of key performances and the spectacle of magical sequences encourage repeat engagement for enthusiasts. Nonetheless, the uneven pacing and peripheral character issues limit broader rewatch appeal, resulting in a moderately high but not universal rewatch factor.

Renowned for his academic prowess and role as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts, he shares a complex history with Gellert Grindelwald, depicted by Mads Mikkelsen. Dumbledore and Grindelwald were once deeply connected, having forged a blood pact that prevents them from dueling—a grim consequence of their youthful love and ambitions.
