On Christmas Eve, commercial artist Molly Gilmore and architectural engineer Frank Raftis are caught up in the frenzy of last-minute shopping in Manhattan. During this hectic day, Frank encounters his colleague Ed, who shares the troubling news of his impending divorce. Meanwhile, Molly runs into her friend Isabelle. Though Isabelle is married, she reveals her plans to spend the holiday with another man, and Molly takes a moment to visit her ill father.
The chaos continues when, in a bustling bookstore, Frank and Molly inadvertently mix up their packages. This mix-up leads to a surprising turn of events on Christmas Day when Molly’s husband, Brian, and Frank’s wife, Ann, each discover they have received the other’s intended gift.
Fast forward three months, as life goes on, Frank and Molly find themselves commuting on the same morning train from their neighboring stops on the Metro-North Hudson Line. Despite their attempts to place each other, it’s only when Frank recalls the bookstore incident that things click into place. Later that day, it becomes apparent that Frank’s boss has plans for him in Houston, while Molly visits her father in the hospital. Conversations between the two unfold as Molly shares her thoughts about Frank with Isabelle, and Frank confides in Ed about his growing interest in Molly.
One evening, the stars align as Frank waits for Molly at Grand Central Terminal. Their conversation deepens, leading to an agreement to meet again on their morning train. Despite their initial reservations, a spark ignites, and they begin to see more of each other. Their emotional connection escalates, culminating in an intimate encounter at Ed’s apartment. However, overwhelmed by the situation, Molly decides to pull back, and they agree to halt their meetings.
Upon arriving home that day, Molly receives heartbreaking news—her father has passed away. The funeral serves as a backdrop for her panic attack, where she confides in Isabelle that it’s not just grief for her father she feels, but rather a profound sense of loss for Frank. Concurrently, Frank grapples with his decision to accept the job in Houston, which causes tension in his marriage to Ann as he reveals his feelings for Molly.
On the night of his departure, Frank reaches out to Molly, hoping to see her one last time before leaving. However, with Brian listening in, Molly decides to end the call. Battling her emotions, she informs Brian that she must see Frank, and in a desperate rush, she speeds towards him through pouring rain. Tragically, she misses him at a train crossing, while Frank is left frustrated when Brian answers his call, relaying that Molly does not wish to speak with him.
As the next Christmas approaches, Frank shares his new reality of separation from Ann with Ed. In a parallel thread, Molly confides in Isabelle, indicating that her own marriage to Brian is unraveling. Fate intervenes when both cross paths at the same bookstore where they first met. Their conversation is tentative, charged with uncertainty, but they go their separate ways. Just as Frank is about to leave, he finds the courage to turn around and chase after her.
Soon after, amidst the growing crowd on a train from Grand Central, they finally embrace, signifying a new chapter in their intertwined lives.
