Macy and Bryan Cranston, along with their sons Derrick and Lester, run a small live theater company from their home in Kansas, where family bonds and local performances form the heart of their lives. Lester, played by Ian Ho, is a middle school outcast who prefers elegant clothing and often finds himself lost in vivid daydreams, imagining conversations with legendary drama figures like Noel Coward. He frequently disrupts their performances, much to the frustration of the stage manager. Their father, Buddy Smart, portrayed by Bryan Cranston, is an ambitious man with big dreams of expanding their theater business, planning to open a second venue and eventually relocate their family to larger cities like Milwaukee to pursue broader success.

During a family dinner, Buddy shares his vision of moving, prompting a vote among family members. Derrick, their athletic son, strongly opposes the idea because he is reluctant to leave behind his girlfriend, Madison Baines, and his position on the school’s football team, both of which are tied to their current community and lifestyle. Conversely, Macy and Lester are enthusiastic about the prospect, especially Lester, who dreams of making it big in New York’s bustling theater scene. The family consensus favors the move, and plans are set into motion.

Once they relocate to the new theater, however, Buddy struggles to attract audiences, and this leads to tension within the family. Macy, exhausted by the daily struggles and Buddy’s relentless pursuit of success, finds herself emotionally neglected, with her memories of her days as a beauty queen still vivid but overshadowed by her current hardships. Meanwhile, Buddy begins to shift his outlook, embracing different faiths and encouraging their congregations to buy tickets to their shows, which surprisingly leads to increased attendance.

Trouble begins when Lester accidentally witnesses Macy in an extramarital affair with someone new. This revelation deeply distresses him, causing him to run away from home. Macy tries to follow, catching up just as Buddy receives a surprising offer to manage a theater in Milwaukee. Buddy, excited and oblivious to Macy and Lester’s distress, leaves to buy champagne to celebrate, but tragedy strikes—he collapses in a convenience store and dies suddenly of a heart attack, despite having been warned by his doctor to retire due to a serious heart condition he had ignored.

With Buddy’s death, the family finds themselves at a crossroads. Having invested everything into the new theater, they are left with no stable home, forcing them to move in with Macy’s brother Walter, played by Chris Cooper, on his farm. At a new school, Lester overhears Derrick — who is upset about being forced into theater work and mocks their family’s past performances — criticizing Buddy and their family’s efforts. This sparks a confrontation in which Lester boldly declares his ambition to succeed in New York within five years.

Meanwhile, Macy struggles with her grief and begins to question her faith as Buddy’s abrupt passing shakes her worldview. Derrick spends time with a girl named Selena, played by Jessica Clement, and, using Buddy’s old advice, tries to impress her. Despite some setbacks, a bond forms between Lester and Selena, who also befriends Lester in school, while Derrick reconnects with his friends and focuses on football, leaving theater behind.

On Macy’s birthday, she receives a package containing a Bible, which Lester claims Buddy had purchased before his death, but it was actually a trick orchestrated by Lester with the help of their old theater director. The gesture offers Macy a spark of hope amid her depression. Slowly, Macy begins to regain her footing, encouraged by her children’s growing confidence and the support of her family. She eventually takes a managerial role at a theater in New Jersey, starting with productions of Neil Simon plays.

In the end, Derrick finds happiness outside the theater with friends and football, while Lester continues to nurture his dreams of a future in the arts. Macy and Lester grow closer, with Macy supporting Lester’s aspirations wholeheartedly. As Lester begins to imagine advice from Buddy once more, their family’s resilience, hope, and dreams for a new beginning shine through—even amid life’s unexpected challenges and losses.
