Darin Southam as Ephraim Hanks and Koleman Stinger as Thomas Dobson (the eight-year-old version) chart parallel paths of faith, duty, and endurance in the mid-1800s, weaving two lives into a shared narrative about courage on the edge of migration and conquest.
Three years after a violent clash with his father, Ephraim leaves home to join the U.S. Navy, only to return to a changed world. His father is dead, and his brother Daniel Sappenfield as Sidney Hanks has joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When their mother fears Sidney is in danger, she sends Ephraim to intervene, hoping to shield the younger man. Instead, Ephraim discovers a new faith of his own and is baptized by Sidney, a turning point that binds his fate to the people he will later meet out on the frontier.
In Preston, Lancashire, eight-year-old Thomas Dobson is baptized and raised in a world of simple beliefs that will shape his later decisions. By 1856, the family learns they are to depart for Zion, Utah, with a handcart company. Thomas, now grown, is initially reluctant to leave the only homeland he has known, a distant, unsettled land that feels uncivilized and far from the comforts of family. Yet his mother’s steadfast faith and insistence that this move is God’s will push him toward the arduous trek that awaits.
Soon the two stories begin to converge. Ephraim Hanks joins the Mormon Battalion and rises as a prominent church figure, dedicated to the ideals he now cherishes. When he hears that the handcart travelers are in dire straits, he volunteers to trek out into the harsh elements to offer aid. His brave journey brings him into contact with the Dobson party, and the lives of these two men—and their families—become linked through shared peril, mutual loyalty, and a deep sense of purpose.
The film balances intimate moments of transformation with the larger sweep of a community in motion. It speaks to endurance in the face of hardship, the strength drawn from faith, and the importance of helping others when the road grows impossibly cold. By threading Ephraim’s frontier courage with Thomas’s gradual commitment to a promised land, the narrative suggests that history is built not only on grand migrations but also on the quiet acts of belief and sacrifice that sustain people through the longest journeys.
