Sridhar Tarun is a final-year management student who earns a chance to pursue postgraduate studies in the United States. He travels to Mumbai for an interview and, on his return by train, meets Preeti Trisha Krishnan and instantly falls for her. Both share a passion for cricket, and Sridhar is also an accomplished football player, but they keep their feelings hidden.

Preeti’s family moves into the neighborhood—her brother Kumar Riyaz Khan is an IPS officer who has been transferred from Bombay on special deputation, prompting the relocation. Around this time, Sridhar’s elder brother-in-law, Anand, a government civil engineer, is revealed to have been imprisoned on false corruption charges linked to a collapsed bridge, adding strain to the family’s circumstances. The principal of Sridhar’s college brings in Reshma Shriya Saran as a student-coach to lead the football team, which intensifies Sridhar’s involvement with football and his drive to trace Preeti by visiting several women’s colleges; simultaneously, Preeti keeps an eye out for him at the men’s college, hoping to reconnect.

A turning point comes when Preeti steps in to help Sridhar’s mother Kalairani during a heart attack; this act deepens their bond. In a bid to locate her, Sridhar goes to LB Stadium during a cricket match, where he is caught in the chaos of a bomb blast that injures him. Just before the blast, the two come close to meeting, but the circumstances pull them apart. After this, Preeti’s parents urge her to accept an arranged marriage and forget the boy she loves, while Sridhar’s mother urges him to focus on his studies and consider studying abroad.

In a twist of fortune, Sridhar learns that Preeti has been living just behind his house, and when her parents come to inform him of the impending marriage, the family dynamics shift again. Sridhar and his circle win an inter-college football cup, even as sorrow arrives with Sridhar’s mother’s death. Sridhar’s brother-in-law’s fate is revisited when Kumar and his men raid the contractor’s godowns and uncover substandard materials, leading to the release of the brother-in-law. The loss of the mother leaves Sridhar feeling lonely, prompting thoughts of emigration.

Three years pass, and the two meet again on the same train. Preeti travels with her newborn nephew, while Sridhar travels with his friend Priyanka Reema Sen, who confesses that she has been trying to push him toward marriage. Sridhar steps off to fetch water, misses the train, and then finds Preeti waiting; the two exchange a heartfelt confession and decide to be a couple at last.
