After an Antarctic guide finds himself and his charge saved from a treacherous storm by a dedicated team of eight sled dogs, they are compelled to evacuate their base temporarily. This brief evacuation quickly turns into an extended absence as winter sets in, leaving the guide consumed with thoughts of returning to the dogs, uncertain if they are alive or dead.
