The fragile domestic setup mirrors a life spent chasing a craft that barely feeds them, and Tetsuzō’s day-to-day grind is shaped by the harsh realities of debt and dependency rather than by steady recognition.

He makes a precarious living by borrowing money from his adoptive father, Nakajima Ise, a skilled mirror-maker whose shop becomes a quiet pivot in the painter’s life. One fateful encounter changes his path: a young, striking prostitute named Ōnao captures his imagination, and he begins a small, obsessive body of drawings centered on her. For a time he even parts with Ōnao by presenting her to Nakajima as a concubine, a decision that will haunt all involved. Ōnao, a woman shaped by trauma and a troubling psyche, exerts a coercive, almost surgical influence over Nakajima, tormenting him until the pressure becomes unbearable and he ultimately hangs himself, leaving Ōnao to confront the consequences of her acts.

After Ōyaku’s death, Sashichi—who adopts the pen name Bakin—devotes himself wholeheartedly to writing, shaping a life around words rather than the intimate entanglements of the past. He ignores Ōei’s deep, enduring feelings for him, choosing instead to pursue a solitary artistic vocation, while Ōei of course remains quietly in love, ultimately withdrawing into celibacy as her devotion steadfastly persists.

Decades pass, and with considerable fame finally comes age. The artist, now revered as Hokusai, endures into his late years, continuing to paint Ichimatsu dolls alongside Ōei. In a poignant turn, Ōei discovers a peasant girl who bears a striking resemblance to Ōnao, a moment that threads back to the earlier chapters of Tetsuzō’s life. Then, in a moment that mingles awe with provocation, Hokusai observes a young ama (pearl diver) playing with a dead octopus. This image becomes the catalyst for a provocative decision: he persuades the girl to pose for a piece of shunga—erotic art—depicting an ama engaged in a threesome with two octopuses, pushing the boundaries of beauty, power, and desire in a way that only art can illuminate.
