Hong Yunsheng, called Little Brother, is viewed as a failure by his community. He stows away to the United States, works as a dishwasher for a Fujian family’s restaurant, fathers an illegitimate son, Fusheng, with the restaurateur’s daughter Xuhui, and is deported back to China. Back home he drifts, estranged from his child‑less older brother who runs a diner, and leans on his new, barely‑known girlfriend Wu Ruifang, an opera troupe performer, for support. Meanwhile his friend Monkey attempts the same dangerous stowaway voyage and dies.
