So Long, My Son 2019

Liu Yaojun and Wang Liyun, and their son Liu Xing (“Xingxing”), share a life with Shen Yingming, Li Haiyan, and their son Shen Hao (“Haohao”) for about thirty years. The two families are bound by work at the same factory and a close bond in their early years, but the ties begin to fray in the 1980s as China undergoes rapid social and economic change. From the outset, the film situates memory and time as nonlinear forces, weaving together moments from different periods to reveal how choices shape futures.

When Xingxing drowns while playing near a reservoir with Haohao and other children, the families’ paths diverge. Yaojun and Liyun move to Fujian and adopt a boy they rename Xingxing, hoping for a fresh start. Yet the new Xingxing grows estranged from his foster parents, stepping away from the bond that once seemed secure as he becomes a teenager. Across town, Yingming and Haiyan carve out power and wealth through real estate, reshaping their fortunes as Haohao pursues a medical career, embodying a different path within the same social currents.

As Haiyan approaches death, she invites the aging couple to reconsider their roots, beckoning them back to a hometown that has been remade by decades of urban development. The reunion underscores how places have changed—how streets, neighborhoods, and memories no longer align with what they once knew. A pivotal, damning confession arrives through Haohao: he had pressured Xingxing to join the play by the reservoir because other children ridiculed him, revealing a painful truth about guilt, responsibility, and the lasting impact of shared trauma.

The narrative reaches toward reconciliation as Haohao reaches out with news—he is returning to visit, bringing his new girlfriend—prompting a quiet, unresolved tension between past and present, between adopted family ties and biological memory.
