In an alternate setting of Han Imperial China, the once-revered dragons have been banished and enslaved by the Emperor due to a widespread climate of distrust. These remarkable creatures are confined to massive pens, where they are forced to channel their Qi, or psychic energy, to extend the Emperor’s life. Among the unfortunate souls in this plight is an orphan girl named Ping, who is raised in captivity by a compassionate elderly woman named Lao Ma(/actor/isabel-gaud). Their lives revolve around the upkeep of imprisoned dragons, including Long Danzi and Lu Yu. Unfortunately, they are overseen by the cruel Master Lan, who mistreats both Ping and Lao Ma. Yet, amidst this harsh reality, Ping finds solace in a friendship with a rat named Hua.
Within her dreams, Ping experiences an extraordinary encounter with Lu Yu, who bestows upon her the responsibility of guarding her dragon egg—a symbol of hope, representing her and Danzi’s unborn child. Tragedy strikes when Lu Yu dies while still in captivity. Following this, the Emperor sends the feared civil servant and dragon hunter Diao](/actor/fernando-castro) to capture Long Danzi, hoping to exploit his vital Qi. In a fit of rage, Diao punishes Master Lan for failing to protect Lu Yu, revealing the harsh consequences of their existence.
Diao soon realizes that Ping possesses the rare ability to harness Qi and attempts to use her as leverage to force Danzi into submission. When soldiers try to confine Danzi into a cage, courageous Ping helps him escape along with her friend Hua. However, Diao manages to secure the valuable dragon egg, bringing it to the Emperor who seeks to enhance his life further with its energy. Driven by ambition, Diao aims to unlock the secrets of the egg’s Qi to attain immortality.
In the wild, Danzi and Ping bond further, as he teaches her to control Qi and reveals her lineage as a member of the Dragon Keepers. With Hua by their side, they embark on a daring mission to retrieve the dragon egg from the clutches of the Imperial palace. Along their journey, Ping encounters Wang Chao](/actor/carlos-de-luna), a herbalist working undercover for Diao, whose intentions remain shrouded in secrecy.
As the conflict escalates, Danzi makes a bold move by attacking the royal palace, engaging in a fierce battle against Imperial soldiers commanded by Kwan](/actor/jos-gmez-adn). In a thrilling sequence, Ping and Hua infiltrate the palace successfully and seize the dragon egg, but their escape is thwarted when they are pursued by troops. They are saved by the unexpected aid of Wang Chao, who guides them to an underground catacomb, where Diao has established a hidden laboratory.
Betrayal soon unravels as Chao chooses to join Diao, traveling with him via a concealed river to the dark laboratory. Ultimately, an epic showdown unfolds, as Danzi confronts Diao, who uses dark sorcery to absorb the Qi from the dragon egg, morphing into a monstrous dragon-like figure. In an act of redemption, Wang Chao sacrifices his life to free the egg from Diao’s clutches.
As the brutish Diao gains the upper hand, Ping’s courage shines through when she persuades Danzi to allow Diao to absorb even more of his Qi, leading to the giant monster’s demise under collapsing rocks. While the remaining Imperial soldiers retreat, Ping and Hua manage to escape with Danzi and the precious dragon egg to the coast. Here, they discover the pool that facilitates the egg’s hatching. In a heroic act, Ping uses her Qi to elevate the gravely wounded Danzi skyward, enabling him to soar across the ocean to the Isle of the Blest, where he can heal. As the adventure concludes, Ping and Hua take on the precious duty of caring for Danzi’s newly hatched son, ensuring that hope endures in a world that had sought to extinguish it.
