Luk Siu-fung [Lydia Shum Tin-Ha] is the matriarch of the Mo family, who run a humble Chinese flatbread restaurant in Hong Kong and keep the family together against threats from local gangsters. She devotes herself to the needs of everyone in the family, guarding them with quiet strength even as her own health falters, a struggle marked by heart problems that shadow her days. On the eve of her wedding anniversary with her longtime husband, Mo Chak-shu, Siu-fung dies. Before she passes, she expresses a wish to ride a Chinese Wedding Sedan in the afterlife, a vow that Chak-shu and their son, Sonny Wu De-Kao Eric Tsang Chi-Wai will strive to fulfill.

When Siu-fung reaches the threshold of the underworld, the wedding sedan arrives just in time to carry her across the Neihe Bridge, where she would be officially welcomed into the underworld and prepared for reincarnation. But the bridge buckles under the weight of the procession, and the sedan carriers and the sedan plunge into the Neihe River. Siu-fung is saved at the last moment by the Spiritworld Keeper, a guardian who oversees crossings between worlds. With the bridge destroyed, Siu-fung cannot complete the crossing, creating an unusual limbo where she remains not fully dead in spiritual terms, yet she cannot return to life in the ordinary sense.

The Spiritworld Keeper attempts to guide Siu-fung back to human life so she can reenter a body and rejoin the living. Yet time runs out for her, and in a poignant turn, her husband and son, thinking the path to resurrection is closed, trigger the cremation of Siu-fung’s body. The film unfolds with a blend of tenderness and whimsy as it probes the ties that bind a family, the stubborn dignity of a matriarch, and the odd rules that govern the crossing between life and afterlife. Through the eyes of a family trying to honor a beloved mother and wife, the story trades in quiet moments of resilience, humor, and the quiet ache of loss, inviting audiences to reflect on duty, love, and what it means to be truly remembered.
