Doom Asylum 1987

In 1977, Mitch Hansen and Judy LaRue are involved in a devastating car crash that leaves Judy dead. During an autopsy on the apparently lifeless Mitch (whose face is left grotesquely disfigured in the process), he stirs to life and erupts in violence, killing the Medical Examiner and the other examiners who had declared him gone. The shocking reversal sets a grim, blood-soaked tone that hints at a trauma that still haunts the present.

Ten years later, a group of friends visits the abandoned asylum where Judy’s daughter Kiki LaRue is along for the ride. A local rock group, Tina and the Tots, practices nearby, and their loud performances in the murky tunnels provoke Darnell to lash out, yet he also finds himself drawn to both Tina and Rapunzel, the band’s enigmatic member. The friends sun themselves in the yard, their carefree afternoon disrupted by water balloons tossed from Tina and her bandmates. When Darnell returns to the asylum, the danger intensifies, and a brutal, mortal end comes quickly as a mortuary tool crushes his skull.

Realizing that Darnell has vanished, Mike ventures into the crumbling structure to search for him. Inside, Godiva roams the halls and sprays graffiti across the walls, a reckless act that foreshadows the nightmarish turn of events. In a bathroom encounter, she becomes a victim: Hanson, a chilling figure who watches classic black-and-white films, dunks her head in liquid nitrogen to freeze her face. The killers’ eerie habit adds a macabre texture to the suspense. Elsewhere, Dennis, a baseball-card collector, loses his card to the wind—an ominous omen—and is murdered with a drilling device.

Up on the roof, Mike confronts Tina about Darnell’s fate, leading to a brutal confrontation in which Tina’s taunts give way to violence. Mike clings to the edge as a struggle ensues; Kiki LaRue and Jane rush to pull him back to safety. Meanwhile, Rapunzel ventures deeper to find Darnell but is killed in a chilling moment when she is strangled with a stethoscope. Tina continues her hunt for her friends, and Jane, with Mike staying close, eventually stumbles into Tina and a room filled with hospital beds as Hanson awakens and lumbers toward Jane with a buzzing buzz saw, killing her in a brutal, facially-focused strike.

Tina’s pursuit escalates as Hanson exits the scene, and Mike, arriving later, discovers Jane’s lifeless form and accuses Tina of the murder. Kiki’s scream of horror grows louder when she and Mike witness Darnell’s blood-streaked bathtub revelation, a grim reminder of the asylum’s hidden violence.

In a desperate bid to escape, Mike and Kiki pray for their missing friends, but the hospital’s horrors close in. An injection knocks Mike unconscious, and Hanson drags Kiki toward the autopsy wing, where she becomes a hostage as he moves to seize Mike. Mike is placed on a table and loses his left toes to a pair of enormous scissors, a brutal symbol of the film’s relentless physical torment. Tina fights back but is crushed by the body processor, emerging from the machine with a horrifying, skin-filled reminder of the asylum’s machinery.

Kiki, seizing a moment of fragile hope, escapes into the surrounding fields but is quickly chased by Hanson, who taunts her by calling her “Judy.” She fights back as he closes in, then discovers a newspaper clipping tucked in his lab coat—revealing a black-and-white photograph of her mother. The man she now learns is her father explains that he possessed wealth and had sent Kiki to a school while he and Judy vacationed. This revelation fractures Judy’s memory and triggers a furious final act: she lunges at her father with a mirror-handled blade, stabbing him in the eye. The film closes on Kiki walking away from the asylum grounds, stepping into an uncertain future, the echoes of the past trailing as she disappears toward an uncertain horizon.
