Anton Mordrid, Jeffrey Combs, is a wandering wizard sent to Earth by a celestial overseer called the Monitor to stop the evil wizard Kabal from opening a gate to Hell. Kabal seeks the philosopher’s stone and several alchemical elements to complete a spell that would unleash his minions from the Fourth Dimension onto the world. For 150 years, Mordrid has watched for signs of Kabal’s presence, and as their epic clash nears, he assumes the role of a criminal psychologist and becomes the mysterious landlord to Samantha Hunt, a police research consultant.
Dr. Mordrid detects a series of thefts of the needed elements, and he begins a determined search for his nemesis. Yvette Nipar as Samantha Hunt proves persistent in piercing Mordrid’s secret life, pushing him to reveal the truth behind his enigmatic façade.
The conflict spills into the Magic Dimension, where the gate is guarded by other good wizards. They are no match for Kabal, who defeats them all except for one survivor who confirms Kabal’s plans for Mordrid. Mordrid returns to Earth to fortify his defenses, but his presence draws suspicion, and he is eventually arrested for murder. Samantha tries to help prove his innocence, and Mordrid finally reveals his true nature and mission to her, leading her to assist in his escape.
In the final showdown, Kabal and Mordrid clash inside the Cosmopolitan Museum as Kabal animates the Tyrannosaurus skeleton to menace the police and open portals to his demonic realm. Mordrid answers with magic of his own, animating a nearby mastodon skeleton to confront the dinosaur. Through a combination of cunning and power, Mordrid defeats Kabal by allowing the mastodon to impale him on its tusk while Kabal is distracted, narrowly averting the complete destruction of reality as we know it. The Monitor then calls Mordrid to cross back into the Magic Dimension, leaving Earth behind for the moment. Later that Christmas, he returns to Earth and spends time with Samantha, inviting her to come with him should he be called away again.
