Orbiting a remote planet, a vast army of the universe’s most dangerous species converges, responding to a strange signal emanating into space. An ancient, broadcasting planet sits at the heart of the opening mystery, sending a message that draws every powerful race in the cosmos to its source. The Doctor [Matt Smith] arrives on a ship, offering peace and companionship, and tries to identify who is listening. As a bizarre gift, he presents the severed eye stalk of a Dalek, only to find the ship teeming with Daleks that surge forward to attack. In the moment of danger, he calls out for “Handles,” and is somehow teleported back into the TARDIS. Inside, the Doctor reveals he is accompanied by a severed Cyberman head he calls Handles, a companion in spirit if not in person, and confesses that even he cannot translate the mysterious signal.
