Doctor Who: The Time of the Doctor 2013

An ancient, broadcasting planet sits at the heart of the opening mystery, sending a message that draws every powerful race in the cosmos to its source. The Doctor [Matt Smith] arrives on a ship, offering peace and companionship, and tries to identify who is listening. As a bizarre gift, he presents the severed eye stalk of a Dalek, only to find the ship teeming with Daleks that surge forward to attack. In the moment of danger, he calls out for “Handles,” and is somehow teleported back into the TARDIS. Inside, the Doctor reveals he is accompanied by a severed Cyberman head he calls Handles, a companion in spirit if not in person, and confesses that even he cannot translate the mysterious signal. He soon receives a phone call from Clara [Jenna Coleman] Oswald, who asks him to pose as her boyfriend for Christmas dinner with her family, a request that pulls him into a far more intimate holiday gathering than either of them expect.

The TARDIS drops the pair outside Clara’s flat, and she rushes inside to find the Doctor, who now has to juggle appearances, deception, and the looming danger of a message that appears to be more than a mere broadcast. To keep up the ruse, he projects a convincing illusion of clothes into her mind, though he clarifies that the effect is not deliberate magic, just a mistake in their shared reality. Clara’s family greets the visitor with warmth, yet the Doctor quickly realizes that something is off in the festive mood, a setup that hides larger threats.

A crucial clue surfaces when they trace the signal to Gallifrey, the Doctor’s long-lost home world, rumored to lie beyond the universe’s edge. The planet is heavily shielded, and even the TARDIS cannot breach the barrier. The Doctor and Clara journey to the Papal Mainframe, orbiting the planet, to seek authorization from Tasha Lem [Orla Brady], the Mother Superior who commands access to the down-planet mission. While they step aside to talk, Clara experiences a dangerous encounter with a member of the Silence, an organization whose memory-erasing ability complicates any attempt to remember them.

Tasha Lem explains that the planet was sealed off to avert a catastrophe, yet she agrees to send the Doctor and Clara down to investigate the signal. On the ground, they encounter the Weeping Angels and end up fleeing back to the TARDIS. They discover a quaint town called Christmas, where no one can tell a lie. The Doctor deduces that the truth field powering the lie-free environment is the same signal broadcasting across the universe, leading him to its source in the town’s bell tower. There he unearths a familiar crack—the same fracture he had previously found in Amy Pond’s House. The truth-telling signal is traced to Gallifrey, a desperate attempt to breach the cracks created by the explosion of the TARDIS and re-enter the universe. The Doctor realizes they are waiting for him to speak his true name so the Time Lords can return, while the others will destroy Trenzalore if the breach is exploited.

Clara is sent back to the TARDIS, which returns her to her home, but she clings to the outside of the ship as it begins to disappear. On the ship, Tasha Lem informs the Doctor that the planet they are on is Trenzalore, and a revelation follows: to prevent a renewed Time Lord war, the surrounding powers will annihilate the world if the Doctor’s true name is spoken. A new faith, called Silence, is established, and the Doctor is barred from speaking. The siege begins: hundreds of years pass as the Doctor defends Christmas from an ongoing assault by Weeping Angels, Cybermen, Sontarans, and more. Yet a stalemate holds because the Doctor can summon Gallifrey with a single word, while the Papal Mainframe threatens widespread destruction if he tries to return.

Clara returns centuries later and finds the Doctor aged and near the end of his current regeneration cycle. He reveals that he has exhausted all his regenerations, and that when he finally dies, his era will end for good. His loyal companion of years, Handles, has finally failed, and Tasha Lem invites them to a summit aboard the Papal Mainframe. They learn that the Silence are memory-erasing confessors who shield the Church’s secrets. The group discovers a rogue faction that kidnapped Melody Pond and altered the Doctor’s history to prevent his true name from returning Gallifrey to the universe. In a dramatic twist, Tasha Lem’s true self surfaces as she transforms into a Dalek-augmented form, yet her original personality reappears at a critical moment to help the Doctor and Clara escape back to Trenzalore. The Doctor remains in Christmas for centuries, fending off attacks and protecting the town as the siege intensifies. Clara arrives again, this time to learn that the Doctor is near death from old age and that the Time Lords might intervene.

In a pivotal moment, Clara pleads with the Time Lords to help the Doctor. The crack in the sky and the universe responds: regeneration energy surges through the rift, revitalizing the Doctor and allowing him to confront the Daleks and their fleet. The energy of the Doctor’s regeneration is especially violent, destroying the Dalek ship and saving Christmas. The Doctor returns to a younger-seeming form, but this rebirth is only temporary, ushering in a new regeneration cycle. He experiences a poignant vision of Amelia, the first face this face ever saw, followed by a vision of adult Amy Pond who touches his cheek and says, “Raggedy Man, good night.”

In a sweeping turn, the Doctor regenerates into a new, older, gaunter form, exclaiming with a touch of humor, “I have kidneys!” and noting, “I don’t like the color.” The TARDIS begins to buck and weave, and he asks Clara, with her characteristic mix of fear and curiosity, if she knows how to fly the thing. The Doctor and Clara’s shared journey continues, even as the town of Christmas looks on during this extraordinary crossroad of time, family, memory, and the infinite reach of the universe.
