Luther: The Fallen Sun 2023

Wealthy trader and ruthless serial killer David Robey (played by Andy Serkis) takes a dark turn when he blackmails and kidnaps cleaner Callum Aldrich. Tasked with the case, DCI John Luther (portrayed by Idris Elba) assures Callum’s mother, Corinne (played by Hattie Morahan), that he will bring her son back safely. However, Robey is not a mere criminal; he uncovers Luther’s illicit actions during his time as a police officer, exposing the dark side of a man who considers himself above the law. This revelation leads to Luther being dismissed from the force, facing prosecution, and ultimately ending up in prison.

Years pass, and Robey reveals his monstrous side by luring Corinne and the families of other victims to a desolate house, where he subsequently sets their children’s remains ablaze. This shocking act occurs when a malfunctioning mobile phone battery ignites a fire, leaving the anguished parents to confront the horror of their children’s bodies discovered hanging in the basement. The unsettling home, once the property of a Saudi national long absent from Britain, becomes a grim setting of Robey’s twisted game.

Stricken with grief, Corinne finds her way to Luther in prison, scolding him for failing to apprehend her son’s murderer. Meanwhile, Robey takes pleasure in taunting Luther from afar, sending a harrowing recording of Callum’s murder through a radio frequency, which is smuggled into Luther’s cell. It becomes apparent that Robey has carefully orchestrated everything, including driving Corinne to prison under false pretenses, convincing the world of his innocence while manipulating those around him.

In a desperate bid for justice, Luther reaches out to DCI Odette Raine (played by Cynthia Erivo), now leading the Serious and Serial Crime unit. During a phone call, Raine reveals that Robey has sent recordings to the families of the eight victims, indicating that he seeks attention and is planning something far more sinister. Despite Luther’s insistence that he needs to stay ahead of this escalating threat, Raine coldly dismisses his plea for assistance, labeling him a “dirty cop” and refusing to aid his investigation.

Determined, Luther conspires with prison personnel, bribing them to arrange an attack that gives him an opportunity to escape during a chaotic transfer to another facility. The situation embroils DCI Martin Schenk (depicted by Dermot Crowley), a retired police officer brought back into the fold to assist in tracking down Luther. Tensions rise as Raine warns she will go to great lengths to protect her investigation, including taking lethal action against Luther if he jeopardizes it.

Luther diligently tracks down Robey’s operation, ultimately discovering the radio station that broadcasts Robey’s messages. From the station owner, he learns about a potentially dangerous encounter that went horribly wrong, illustrating the depths of Robey’s depravity. Meanwhile, Raine’s team uncovers a sinister online “red Room,” with members choosing the fates of kidnapped victims who have been missing across Europe in recent weeks.

As the investigation intensifies, Robey’s malice culminates in the kidnapping of Raine’s daughter, Anya (incarnated by Lauryn Ajufo). With her daughter’s safety in jeopardy, Raine reluctantly agrees to collaborate with Luther, who uncovers the link between Robey and a disfigured woman, his ex-wife Georgette. Luther makes the unsettling connection that Robey has a pattern of ties to individuals he has tormented.

The chase takes Luther and Raine to Robey’s menacing mansion in rural Norway, which serves as a horrifying stage for his sadistic “Red Bunker” livestream events, where captives are tortured for entertainment. Following a harrowing encounter, they manage to escape the bunker, but not before a final showdown in a frozen lake culminating in Robey’s demise. As Robey sinks into the depths, Luther is pulled to safety by local authorities and his ally Schenk, yet back in London, his struggles continue. A mysterious figure from MI5, Cranfield (played by Guy Williams), approaches him with an intriguing offer that may keep him from returning to prison, hinting at a potential new chapter in Luther’s tumultuous life.
