Do Not Disturb 1965

An American couple, Mike Harper [Rod Taylor] and Janet Harper [Doris Day], relocate to England when Mike takes a job with a textile and fashion company. Mike hopes to secure a stylish flat in the heart of London, but Janet instead discovers a rural estate about thirty miles from the city in Kent. Mike frequently commutes by train, and to save time he often stays in a company flat in London rather than returning to Kent, a pattern that leaves Janet feeling lonely and neglected.

Janet grows uneasy, suspecting that Mike is having an affair with his assistant, Claire Hackett [Maura McGiveney], and their busybody landlady Vanessa Courtwright [Hermione Baddeley] pushes Janet to play along with a pretend affair of her own. The situation becomes more tangled when a suave Italian antiques dealer, Paul Bellari [Sergio Fantoni], arrives to decorate the house and begins to charm Janet. Bellari whisks Janet off to Paris, where she is introduced to several children; despite her inebriation after champagne, she deflects his advances by hitting him on the cheek. Paul finds out and concludes that nothing happened.

There is a work party organized by Paul’s employer, which brings the couples’ tensions into sharper relief. The only person who knows that Janet is Mike’s wife is Mr. Simmons [Reginald Gardiner], a detail that adds a quiet strain to the unfolding events. In the end, Paul and Janet realize that their suspicions were false, and they reconcile with one another, returning to a more stable understanding of their relationship.
