In 1879, Auguste Rodin was commissioned to create a monumental sculpture for the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Inspired by Lorenzo Ghiberti's bronze doors for the Florence Baptistery, which Michelangelo called “the door to paradise,” Rodin embarked on a thirty-year journey to create La porte de l’enfer. Drawing inspiration from Dante’s The Divine Comedy, the ambitious ten-panel work depicts a vast panorama of human suffering and despair. Following Rodin's death in 1917, notable sculptures like The Thinker and The Kiss were separated from the original bronze casting.
