Disclosure Day delivers a visually striking sci‑fi thriller anchored by strong performances and ambitious set‑pieces, yet its narrative coherence falters under a weighty premise. The direction and technical execution showcase Spielberg’s trademark craftsmanship, while the score and cinematography elevate the sensory experience. However, the script’s conventional beats and occasional pacing slack result in a mixed level of engagement, leading to a film that rewards repeated viewings for its atmosphere but may leave some viewers wanting deeper story resolution.

In 2026, the world stands on the brink of a second global conflict as a cybersecurity expert named Daniel Kellner, Josh O’Connor, steals a shard of extraterrestrial technology along with secret Wardex Corporation files that document human-alien contact dating back to Roswell. Wardex CEO Noah Scanlon, Colin Firth, quickly spots the breach and brands Daniel a foreign spy, forcing him to vanish with his girlfriend, Jane Blankenship, Eve Hewson. This pair seeks safety in a convent while a powerful shadow loom over them, with Wardex intent on sealing the breach and silencing any whistleblowers.

Meanwhile, in Kansas City, Margaret Fairchild, Emily Blunt, a television meteorologist, experiences a strange omen: a cardinal bird flies into her home, watches her intently, and departs, but the moment triggers something deeper. As she goes on-air to deliver the weather, she unexpectedly speaks in an unknown language, a moment captured on live television and quickly circulated online. Wardex wastes no time recognizing the significance, identifying the language as extraterrestrial, which lands Margaret under intense scrutiny and after a medical scare, she too chooses to hide from those who would use her abilities for coercion or control.

Daniel reveals the stolen material to Jane, explaining that Wardex has long experimented on alien captives and is attempting to reverse-engineer their technology. He wants to bring the information to light, hoping the world will understand what has truly happened. Using a device that enhances his telepathic powers, Scanlon forges a psychic bond with Jane and uses it to track their every move, chasing them to a hotel where a confrontation looms. Jane escapes with the incriminating evidence, but Daniel is captured in the process. As Margaret’s powers mature, she begins to see visions of Daniel and follows these signs to a remote black site where he is being held.

The two fugitives finally reunite and discover a way to escape by leveraging Margaret’s empathic abilities. She learns how to influence their pursuers with a calm, persuasive force, enabling a daring getaway. A violent reminder of the danger still surrounding them comes when one of Scanlon’s loyal, unaffected men crashes a car into the side of a passing train; Daniel pulls Margaret to safety just before they leap onto the moving train and vanish into the night.

With hostilities between nuclear powers edging toward a critical moment, a group of former Wardex employees steps forward as whistleblowers. Their leader, Hugo Wakefield, shelters Daniel and Margaret in a warehouse that holds a carefully reconstructed memory of Margaret’s childhood home, urging her to reclaim suppressed recollections tied to the phenomenon. Inside the warehouse, Margaret uncovers the truth: she and Daniel were abducted by extraterrestrials as children, experiments that endowed them with their current abilities. She also learns that the peculiar animals appearing in their lives are actually extraterrestrials lurking in benign disguises to observe them.

Armed with new memory and purpose, Margaret and Daniel—accompanied by the whistleblowers—storm the former Wardex TV studio to broadcast what they call “Disclosure Day.” The world is suddenly confronted with undeniable evidence of alien encounters and a government cover-up. As the broadcast spreads globally, the whistleblowers reveal that they have been sheltering one of the extraterrestrials. The alien privately communicates a message to Daniel, who then passes it to Margaret. With global eyes watching, Margaret braces herself to deliver the message, and when she speaks, the room falls silent, ready for the truth to echo around the world: > Listen.
