The film chronicles the career of detective inspector Marianne Atzeroth-Freier within the Hamburg police force during the 1980s and 1990s. Beginning in the late 1970s, Marianne, a thirty-year-old single parent, becomes one of Hamburg’s pioneering female police officers. Facing strong opposition in a male-dominated environment, she overcomes bullying and skepticism to become the first woman promoted to the homicide squad. Her persistence leads her to investigate the "acid barrel murderer" case, making a crucial contribution to its resolution despite resistance from her superiors.
