In 1968 West Germany, priest’s daughters Marianna and Juliane both campaign for social reform such as legal abortion, but take opposite routes. Juliane works as a journalist while Marianna joins a violent militant group. When Marianna is arrested and placed in solitary confinement, Juliane becomes her only link to the world, continuing to aid her despite disagreeing with her tactics and pressure from her boyfriend Wolfgang. The film follows Juliane’s growing doubts about how her sister is treated.
