Lance Poole, a Shoshone veteran of the Civil War and Medal of Honor recipient, returns to his home in Medicine Bow, Wyoming, a quiet town where the air is tense and the locals look suspiciously at Poole and his father because they own a large, valuable stretch of land. The welcome is chilly from the start: a local doctor refuses to treat Poole’s father, who soon dies, and Poole finds even simple pleasures, like a drink at the saloon, out of reach in a place that prizes prejudice as much as property.
