Devil in the Flesh 1998

In Los Angeles, a beautiful, troubled teenager named Debbie Strand is being raised by her previously estranged grandmother after her mother and her mother’s boyfriend die in a suspicious house fire. The grandmother is an extremely strict, fundamentalist Christian who treats Debbie as if she were her late mother, insisting she wear her mother’s old clothes rather than buying anything new. This severe upbringing fuels a growing anger in Debbie, who lashes out at times, even attacking her grandmother with her walking cane. When the grandmother threatens to send Debbie to reform school, Debbie yanks the cane from her hands and kills her with it, a shocking act that marks the beginning of a dark, Breaking Point-era trajectory.

After the tragedy, Debbie transfers to a new school, where she becomes enthralled with Peter Rinaldi, an English teacher. But Peter has a fiancée named Marilyn and a strong moral code, so he rejects Debbie’s repeated advances. The rejection sets off a dangerous cascade: Debbie’s fixation intensifies and bodies begin to pile up around the school, casting a pall over the campus and shaking the lives of everyone involved. During the chaotic climax, Debbie breaks into Marilyn’s home with the intent to murder her. Peter realizes Debbie has gone there and follows behind. While he is on his way, Debbie confronts Marilyn, who tries to flee through the kitchen, but Marilyn is knocked unconscious by Debbie. Peter arrives just in time to intervene and saves Marilyn, yet Debbie manages to stab him in the shoulder in the struggle. The emergency response follows quickly, and Peter is rushed away in an ambulance while Debbie is arrested by the police, bringing the terrifying sequence to a close.
