Ellie Masters is a teenager who becomes an orphan after her prostitute mother and one of her Johns are violently attacked with a hammer and the house is set ablaze. Calvin Carruthers, a dogged detective investigating Ellie’s mother’s death, becomes personally invested in her safety and future. Ellie is sent to an isolated orphanage run by the cruel and calculating Mrs. Deere, with her loyal, brutal handyman, Tom Kredge. The days leading up to Ellie’s arrival are harrowingly quiet but deadly, as one of the other orphans, Ernest, tries to escape only to be hunted down by Kredge, who amputates his hand and leaves him to bleed to death, a brutal show of the place’s lawlessness.

Inside the house, life under Mrs. Deere’s regime is a harsh cycle of endless chores and control. Ellie soon discovers that the orphanage operates like a grim workshop: children are forced to perform grueling tasks while Deere and Kredge siphon off the welfare money. The house’s stability is maintained by Harold Mullins, a social worker who is easily swayed by Deere’s charm and who overlooks obvious irregularities. Before Mullins can complete his headcount, Deere and Kredge haul out a stash of bodies from a cellar freezer, staging them as sickly patients in the infirmary. Hidden away among the cold corpses is the dead body of Deere’s husband, which she speaks to as if he were still living. The chilling deception underscores a sense that nothing in this place is what it seems.

When Carruthers visits Ellie at the orphanage, she opens up about the exploitation and abuse she endures, and her fear for the other children. In the background, Walter, a 21-year-old who helps Deere around the house, draws attention and sparks jealousy in Bunch, Ellie’s roommate, who competes for Walter’s limited affection. A darker secret emerges as Deere’s control intensifies: Jennifer, another resident, has been tied up in the attic for days after attempting to run away. Ellie attempts to help Jennifer by offering water, but Kredge blocks her, revealing the depth of the cruelty within the walls. In response, Ellie hatches a plan to run away and find her biological father, hoping for a life beyond this suffocating place.

Kredge agrees to help Ellie escape under false pretenses, yet the moment she steps into the basement with him, he makes a violent move to assault her. Deere interrupts the assault, and her calm, chilling explanation about the inevitability of revival after death suggests a callous philosophy that underpins Deere’s rule. That night, Ellie awakens to a masked figure looming over her bed with a hammer, a moment that Deere dismisses as a nightmare. The next day, Ellie’s attempted escape grows more urgent when she finds Walter asleep with Bunch; she packs a suitcase, only to uncover Ernest’s severed hand in it, a grisly symbol of the house’s true dangers. Kredge traps Ellie in the basement freezer, and Pete, another orphan, witnesses the scene and tries to warn the others.

Mullins arrives to investigate the missing children and threatens to involve the police, prompting Deere and Kredge to murder him and drag his body to the freezer. In the ensuing chaos, the masked figure reappears and attacks Kredge, killing him, which allows Ellie to slip away into the woods. Deere drags Kredge’s body into the freezer but is herself locked inside when Jennifer, who has been freed from the attic, helps, and Ellie escapes into the surrounding trees.

In the forest, Ellie discovers Ernest’s corpse and is confronted by the masked figure, who turns out to be Detective Carruthers. He reveals that he has been watching Ellie for signs of her guilt and that his interest in her is both romantic and strategic: he knows about her possible involvement in her mother’s death and uses that knowledge to manipulate her into marriage. The truth unsettles Ellie, but Carruthers drops another bombshell: he confesses that her mother lost her virginity to him.
