Hans Fallada’s post‑war novel The Drinker follows wholesaler Erwin Sommer as he abandons his narrow bourgeois life, only to be drawn into a world ruled by alcohol, where promises of freedom prove empty and the drink’s grip is the certainty. Ulrich Plenzdorf adapted the 1944/45 novel for a WDR TV film by Tom Toelle, starring Harald Juhnke as Sommer.
