Four Atlanta businessmen—Lewis Medlock, Ed Gentry, Bobby Trippe, and Drew Ballinger—set out on a canoeing expedition down the remote Cahulawassee River in northern Georgia, aiming to taste true wilderness before a dam reshapes the landscape. Lewis is an ardent outdoorsman and natural leader, confident in his survival skills; Ed has some experience but lacks Lewis’s swagger; Bobby and Drew are relative newcomers who bring a mix of curiosity and nerves to the trip. On the road to their launch, the four travel in pairs, and a sharp edge appears in their approach to the locals, who view the city outsiders with wariness and suspicion.

A brief stop at a rural gas station introduces a tension-laden but human moment: Drew, guitar in hand, challenges a young banjo player to a friendly musical duel, and the two share a moment of communal joy that briefly lifts the mood of the group. The scene hints at a fragile bond between strangers that can still be found in small moments of shared rhythm and dance, even as hostility lingers in the air. When the party splits into two canoes, misfortune quickly follows: the two crafts become separated, and the group is thrust into a harsher, less forgiving wilderness than they anticipated.

In the woods, danger reveals itself in the form of a pair of mountain men, one armed with a shotgun and both bearing the rough marks of a hard life. A brutal encounter erupts after an argument, and Bobby is forced to undress while the unarmed man menacingly rapes him, demanding that he “squeal like a pig.” The trauma escalates as Ed is tied to a tree and Lewis responds with lethal force, killing the rapist with a bow and arrow while the other man escapes into the trees. The moment fractures the group’s sense of right and wrong, and a heated debate ensues about what to do next. In the end, Ed and Bobby side with Lewis’s hard line: bury the body and move on as though nothing had happened, a decision that marks a turning point for all of them and sets the stage for what comes next.

The journey downriver grows increasingly perilous as a dangerous stretch of rapids looms. Drew and Ed push ahead in the lead canoe, but disaster strikes when Drew falls into the rushing water and the canoes collide on jagged rocks. The crash hurls the remaining men into the river, destroying one canoe and leaving Lewis with a broken thigh while Ed and Bobby are carried ashore separately. The trio grapples with fear, grit, and the grim realization that survival will demand more than skill—it will demand choices they never anticipated making.

Huddled in a gorge, Lewis urges Ed to take a vantage point for an ambush, convinced a second mountain man lies in wait above them. Ed climbs to a precarious overhang and waits in the shadows until morning, when a figure appears and aims a rifle. A tense, panicked shot follows, and Ed kills the man, but he tumbles backward, injuring himself in the process. Inspecting the body, Ed discovers the man has all of his teeth intact, but only after realizing the man is wearing dentures, a detail that unsettles him as he reassesses who they might be dealing with. The group decides to dispose of the corpse in the river, ensuring it will never be found, and repeats the grim ritual with Drew’s body as they press on.

At Aintry, the exhausted travellers finally reach civilization and spin a cover story for Sheriff Bullard, hoping to protect themselves from a double-murder charge. They weave a tale of a treacherous journey and a dramatic survival, but the sheriff’s skepticism lingers just beneath the surface. A deputy named Queen is shown to be suspicious, especially after his own brother-in-law’s unexplained disappearance following a hunting trip, though there is no concrete evidence to arrest the men. Bullard ultimately cautions them to abandon this kind of undertaking and to never return to the area, leaving the men with a chastening sense of how thin the line is between daring adventure and deadly consequences. The trio resolves to live with their deception for the rest of their lives, clinging to a fragile lie as a shield against the truth.

Back home, Ed reconnects with his wife and son, carrying the weight of what happened on the river. Time passes, yet the memory haunts him: a bloated hand rises from a lake in a nightmare, a chilling reminder that the experience cannot be left behind and may never truly end. The film lingers on the uneasy mix of relief and guilt, suggesting that the choice to survive at any cost can corrode a person’s sense of self and leave a lasting, unsettling aftermath.
