Vanessa Lemor, a lonely 13-year-old Yup’ik girl with a vivid imagination, is dumped by her true love, Philip Georgey, 14, and spends the summer in Fairbanks, Alaska, working at an ice cream shack while obsessing over the heartbreak. After countless efforts to erase the memory of heartbreak fail, she resolves to win back Philip Georgey at Nichols Academy, a close-minded preparatory school where the Georgey family is legendary.

Awarded the only minority scholarship, Vanessa Lemor’s new life becomes a nightmare. Back from the summer abroad and fluent in French, Philip Georgey ascends to popular status, while Vanessa is relegated to the bottom of the prep school caste system with the rest of the FUBARs. Rounding out the rest of the FUBARs are Hercules Howard, a lovable but socially inept boy with wildly overprotective parents, Samantha, a 14-year-old who claims her father is a rapper, and Nothing, formerly Madeline, whose family owns a funeral parlor. Vanessa’s consolation prize is Philip’s decision to act as her student advisor. Philip, wishing the best for his pupil, tries to reintroduce the values that once brought them together—the pursuit of individuality and an embracement of social consciousness: an alternative lifestyle for a better world. Unfortunately, Vanessa misinterprets his preaching, alienating herself by presenting an anarchist essay at the opening school ceremony. To complicate matters further, she is the only freshman captain selected for the school’s infamous Snowstorm Survivor competition, an event inspired by Native traditions at the World Eskimo Indian Olympics.

Vanessa Lemor believes that winning the Snowstorm Survivor championship is the only way to win back Philip Georgey’s heart. She quickly forms a quirky team with her growing fan base in the weight room. Team FUBAR trains for the event, driven by Vanessa’s quest for true love. But the competition—and the school culture that sustains it—perverts the Native Eskimo games, turning them into a ritual that deepens a class divide rather than celebrating a shared heritage.

After the tragic loss of a beloved teammate, Vanessa Lemor is forced to confront a harder truth: love isn’t won through a championship or through conformity, but through embracing her own heritage and identity. In a journey that blends grief, growth, and cultural pride, she learns to honor her Native roots and to reclaim the spirit of the World Eskimo Indian Olympics, discovering that true connection comes from authenticity, respect, and a community that values every voice.
