In the bustling heart of Paris, specifically in Les Halles, the long-divorced André Chatelin Jean Gabin is a respected restaurateur who has built a life on honesty and steady routine. One day, a mysterious young woman arrives with a plea: she is Catherine, the daughter of his ex-wife Gabrielle, who has died, leaving her homeless and penniless. The gesture seems kind, and André offers her a room and a job, hoping to help without losing his balance. Yet Catherine’s presence unsettles the delicate equilibrium of his life, and the atmosphere at the restaurant begins to shift as she quietly tests the boundaries of his generosity.
Catherine’s charm soon gives way to manipulation. She sows seeds of discord between André Chatelin and his close friend, a medical student who is like a son to him, Gérard Gérard Blain. The young man’s once-sturdy trust is strained as rumors, misunderstandings, and subtle pressures push him toward a breaking point. Behind the scenes, Catherine secretly starts siphoning money from André to support her mother—who, contrary to the initial claim, is not dead but an ex-prostitute who has fallen into a ruinous drug habit in a sordid hotel. This double life tightens Catherine’s grip on the situation, while André remains mostly unaware of how thoroughly he is being pulled into a web of deception and danger.
As the tension thickens, Catherine implements a calculated scheme to secure her future as André’s heir. She engineers a scenario in which André, under the pretense of helping her, accompanies her to her room and becomes involved in what appears to be a consensual marriage. The plan is cruel and precise: with wealth within reach, she aims to free herself from restraint and to secure her power over André’s life. The alliance with Gérard shifts abruptly when she turns to him for help in eliminating André; she exploits his medical knowledge and seduces him to carry out the murder. When Gérard resists killing André, Catherine chooses violence: she strangles him and then pushes his car into the river, together with his dog César.
The aftermath drives a grieving André to identify the tragedy and report what happened, leaving a crucial clue for the police by sharing his telephone number. They reach out to confirm whether the woman seen in Gérard’s car could be Catherine, and the description points squarely to her. Realizing she has been exposed, Catherine flees to her mother’s hotel, but the dog César, who has managed to escape the watery peril, trails the trail of fear and guilt to a final, fatal confrontation. In the end, the pursuit of wealth and security entangles Catherine in a deadly reckoning, and the quiet, steadfast world that André had built is forever altered by the choices of those around him.
