DC Showcase: The Phantom Stranger 2020

Set in 1969, Marcie — a young girl who seeks enlightenment and freedom from her controlling parents — travels across the country in a van with a small group of hippies: Dee Dee / Violet, along with Harry and Ted, all heading toward California in search of truth and spiritual guidance amid a world torn by war, pollution, and lies.

Unbeknownst to them, they are being watched by the enigmatic The Phantom Stranger, who speaks a chilling line as he closes in:

Not all those who wander are lost. But many are and, once lost, they may truly be lost forever.

He arrives at a house not far from Los Angeles that was once owned by an old-time movie star, and is now in the hands of Seth. The property is a troubling sight—lawn unmowed for weeks, a front yard fountain clogged with dead fish—yet the group rejoins the gathering inside, drinking wine and dancing as a ceremony unfolds. Marcie steps outside for a cigarette break and, drawn by a sense that something isn’t right, she notices the eye on the doorknob and the strange aura that surrounds the place. The Stranger, who has been shadowing Seth, warns her that appearances are deceiving, that truth hides not at the end of a road but inside those who walk the road.

Inside, Seth begins a ritual with candles and a ritual dance, the participants animated by song and smoke, their foreheads being marked with wine from his chalice. As he closes in with a kiss for each of the hippies, the pendant around his neck—the Ouroboros pendant—glows, and one by one they collapse dead to the floor. When it is Marcie’s turn, the Stranger’s warning feels suddenly urgent, and she narrowly escapes being drawn into the same fate. The Stranger reveals the ravenous truth: Seth is a soul-eating vampire whose immortality depends on the very pendant he wears.

A fierce confrontation erupts: the Stranger and Seth clash in a sword duel, danger crackling through the air. Marcie, meanwhile, witnesses her friends drained of life and taken from the living world. In a desperate turn, she knocks the Stranger unconscious with an Egyptian statue as Seth tries to tempt him with a final offer to end the Stranger’s endless wandering. While the struggle rages, Marcie uses her wits to exploit Seth’s momentary distraction and steals the pendant, smashing it to pieces. Without his magical lifeline, Seth turns to dust and ash, his threat finally extinguished.

The Phantom Stranger, satisfied with the choice Marcie has made, nods in quiet approval as they depart. As they move away from the house, the Stranger asks what Marcie will do next. She repeats the creed he once uttered: “Truth lies not at the end of a road, but inside those who walk the road.” She vows to keep traveling in search of it, no matter how long or far it takes, determined to carry that truth with her. The phantom presence of the Stranger lingers in the night, watching over her as she drives off into the city, a giant silhouette watching from the sky.
