DC Showcase: Adam Strange 2020

Adam Strange’s origin story unfolds through a series of vivid memories and difficult choices. On the war-torn planet Rann, a Thanagarian armada strikes, leaving devastation in its wake and stealing away much of what he loves. His Rannian wife, Alanna, is lost in a missile strike, and his first instinct is to search for their daughter Aleea, clinging to the hope of reunion. In the middle of this quest, a mysterious Zeta Beam abruptly hurls him across the cosmos to Eden Corp Mining Colony Number 75, a place far from home.

From the moment the beam arrives, he holds on to a stubborn resolve: he will find a way back to Rann and to Aleea, no matter the odds. He studies the beam with cold precision, applying physics, mathematics, and careful calculations to predict its next arrival. Yet as the years slip by, the beam remains silent, and the weight of delay gnaws at him. The toll shows in his body and spirit—he becomes exhausted, weathered, and his grip on hope loosens into a dangerous alcohol-fueled drift, punctuated by clashes with the colonists.

A mining foreman, Foreman, sees the danger and offers a word of warning and a path forward. He knows what it means to have a family to return to, and he pays attention to Strange’s stubborn streak, reminding him of the humanity that still matters. The colony is suddenly under siege by underground, bug-like aliens, and the foreman asks for Strange’s help to defend them. But his condition hamstrings him at first; he’s too intoxicated to act, so the colonists must shelter in place and ride out the attack.

When Strange sobers enough to see the true peril around him, the memory of Rann’s invasion and the need to protect others rekindle his sense of purpose. He springs into action, and together with the frightened miners and their families, he fights back against the alien threat. The invaders are driven away and the mine, shaken by the encounter, begins to shut down as the community weighs the possibility of future attacks. Despite the danger, the survivors prepare to leave, grateful for each other’s safety but wary of what lies ahead.

Gratitude ties itself to a moment of restraint and endurance. The foreman, recognizing the danger Strange faced and the lives he helped save, offers a ride to safety. Yet Strange, anchored by the promise he made to himself, chooses to stay and wait for the beam’s inevitable return. As the spaceship departs, his rocket pack emits a signal, announcing that the Zeta Beam has finally returned. With that beacon, he can resume his long, arduous voyage toward Rann and the chance to reunite with his daughter Aleea, continuing his quiet, unwavering quest across the stars.
